Border Patrol Agents Must Guard Gear with Their Lives
Border Patrol agent Robert Rosas was murdered for his equipment. Several smugglers set a trap for Rosas to steal his night vision goggles.

Agent Rosas, a three-year veteran patrol agent, was targeted by smugglers because he carried a set of night vision goggles. According to a plea agreement reached in the San Diego Federal Court Monday, Emilio Gonzales, who pleaded guilty to the murder of Rosas, stated that he and other accomplices lost a pair of night vision goggles while smuggling some people across the border. NBC Los Angeles reports they targeted Rosas to replace the lost equipment.
Night vision equipment is common issue within the Border Patrol and is also often used by smugglers to traverse the terrain without flashlights, which gives their position away to agents.
Gonzales admitted in the plea agreement that he and several other subjects concocted a plan to lure the Rosas into a trap in order to steal his night vision equipment. They crossed illegally into the United States, left footprints for Rosas to follow and then held him at gunpoint. Gonzales stated the plan went bad and a struggle began, ending when a gun went off, killing the agent.
All Border Patrol agents are familiar with the Azrack-Newton case, in which two agents gave up their guns and were later executed. Agents are trained to never give up their weapons and fight rather than face execution by their captors.
Rosas was shot four times in the head, once in the neck and three times in the torso.
As a Border Patrol agent for over 25 years, this scenario sends chills down my spine. Looking for tracks, called sign-cutting in the Border Patrol, is a common occurrence and was part of a daily ritual in my patrol area.
Once tracks left by would-be immigrants are discovered, an agent will follow them with other agents, if available, jumping ahead. Most groups of aliens are unarmed and arrests are made usually without incident. Although agents are wary for drug smugglers, the thought of a group leading an agent into a trap would be unexpected and truly unfathomable.
Four of five suspects in this horrendous crime have been arrested. One of the previously arrested murderers, Christian Daniel Castro-Alvarez, pleaded guilty in 2020 and received a 40-year sentence.
One fugitive is still being sought; a $100,000 reward has been offered for the capture of Jose Juan Chacon-Morales, 26.
