Squirrel Hunting is Still a Pastime
Keeping old customs alive one Iowa woman enjoys hunting and eating squirrels.
Joan Simon, of Farmersburg, developed a love for the woods early in life when she used to go coon hunting with her young brother, Jerry, on the family farm in Mill Ville.
Today, Simon enjoys keeping old traditions alive by hunting for squirrels, but not just for the thrill of the kill, she also cooks a mean squirrel.
"I prefer to hunt with a 22 rifle because with a shot gun you have to pull hairs out of them and pellets," she said. "The rifle is just one shot, one hole - it's easier," she added. Squirrel hunting is fairly new to Simon, she has done a lot of hunting for other animals over the years. "Squirrel hunting is more challenging, it's more rewarding, you get to see the woods, you don't have to shoot anything, the object is to enjoy yourself," she explained.
Simon pointed out that if anyone wants to go squirrel hunting they will have to research their woods to know the habitat of a squirrel. The hunter has to get a lot closer to the prey.
"Deer travel but squirrels stay in their territory," she said. "You have to know where their den is. I find that I can get near the squirrels without frightening them by walking like a deer," she added. Simon explained that she normally sits down and watches them playing and then she takes her shot. "Hunting is not just going in and shooting," she said. "Last Sunday I got three squirrels," she added.
Squirrel hunting is not as popular with women in Iowa as it is in other states. There are competitions in other states Simon explained. "In this area it is hard to go buddy/buddy squirrel hunting as not many women do it," she said. Simon enjoys the process of cleaning the squirrels and describes it as one of the best parts of the hunt. "It is a family event - cooking and eating it," she said.
After skinning and gutting a squirrel she cuts it up into pieces, making sure that the glands are out, which look like little pellets. She then browns it, adds some onions and spices to make a gravy from the juices, before putting it in the oven to cook slowly. "There are a variety of ways to cook squirrel, but this way makes it succulent," she said. "I serve it with baked butternut or acorn squash," she added.
Simon explains that squirrel hunting is enjoyable because she can involve her 85-year-old father, Mike Simon. (MW) Her father helps her with putting on the scope and telling stories of how he hunted. She would rather be invited to go squirrel hunting in the woods than to dine in a fine restaurant.
