A Guide to Hunting Knives: What Kind Do You Need?
Which knife fits your needs as a hunter? Read on and see!
Not every type of knife is reliable enough to take along on the hunt, however. There's a wide assortment of cutlery that can potentially help or hinder your attempts to bring home dinner. For the purpose of helping you understand the different sorts of knives, I'll be going over the ten most useful hunting knives.
1. Drop-Point Knife.
This one is certainly not for everyone. Unless you're something of a big game hunter, you'll want to avoid this one. The blade is curved and robust- generally made of broad steel. The Drop-Point allows the hunter to quickly skin with the entire edge instead of merely the point. It typically does no harm to the meat and is unlikely to wear down too much over time. Also good for splitting bones (ribs, pelvis) if a hatchet is unavailable.
2. Folding Knife.
This is the prime choice for part-time hunters that might have other uses in mind for their trusty knife. It's capable of folding its blade inward and locking for a safer way to carry it. They aren't as strong as some of their cousins, but they're much more portable. Oftentimes the Folding Knife also comes with various other attachments that can be of use to the owner. Recommended for smaller game.
3. Clip-Point Knife.
Though thinner than its 'Drop-Point' cousin, the Clip-Point is another excellent choice for part-time hunters. It can fulfill all the capabilities of the Drop-Point- though with a slight drop in efficiency. They do tend to be cheaper, which is a plus. If you aren't too serious and won't be after large game, this one will serve you well. It has all the failings and benefits of the Drop-Point, but at a lower price and quality.
4. Gut Knife.
This speciality knife comes with an elongated hook at the tip used for making an incision into the abdomen. It won't paunch the animal, thus lower the quality of the meat. They tend to be quite strong, able to stand with the other durable hunting knives. Their price is also on a similar level. Considering their irregular shape these aren't very versatile and won't give as much in the way of protection. It may be best to keep this one as a secondary knife.
5. Skinner Knife.
These are specifically designed to remove the skin from large animals without damaging the meat. They tend to have much wider, highly sweeping blades to separate the flesh and skin. This one's recommended for hunters that intend to do the butchering themselves- it can save a lot of time. It does just as good a job cleaning as the others- its one drawback being it can be among the least durable of the knives.
6. Bowie Knife.
This one is great for not only hunting, but self-protection. Its intimidating look and fine blade make it an excellent security precaution. Capable of skinning and hacking away bone. Also a fashionable look. Not all states consider the 'Bowie Knife' legal however- considering it can be a most lethal weapon. Like the machete, this one is generally better suited for protection against large, dangerous game. For image-conscious hunters, this one will also score you some manliness points among the guys at the lodge. Just be careful and keep this in its sheath when it isn't being used.
7. Trench Knife.
A somewhat non-traditional choice, but a favorite among veteran hunters. This one's a good choice for hunters that want a knife that'll keep them safe from potentially dangerous animals- as opposed to skinning. If you intend to take the fight directly to large prey, this one is for you. The blade isn't very wide, but it is long and pierces with ease. More of a spike than a blade, you won't be able to butcher the animal with this- but you can bring it down if needed. Depending on the model, you may be able to use it for hacking away bones or undergrowth. It may be best to bring along either a Folding Knife or a Fixed-Blade Knife just in case.
8. Pocket Knife.
A great choice as a secondary knife- like a spare tire. If your main knife is unable to fulfill its duties, this one will supply a decent substitute for the time being. It also comes equipped with several other useful tools. They canre't very strong, but they are very versatile. On the one hand, you are limited by the attachments to your choice of a pocket knife- yet the fact that it comes with multiple features makes it more varied than any other type. As long as you aren't pursuing big game, this one is a great pick. When the prey gets too big or the meat is too rough, this one won't deliver. It does have the benefits of a Folding Knife- making it great for concealing and safety. Recommended as a secondary knife- a supporting role to your main cutlery.
9. Machete.
Used primarily for jungle or thick forest hunting. This one is great for chopping aside vegetation and providing mid-range defense against hostile prey. Not recommended for skinning or barren landscape hunting. This one is for hunters that don't intend to butcher their catch and want some sturdy protection. The machete can be from 20 to 30 inches and certainly carries a menacing presence. For hunters that face a great deal of undergrowth as well as large, dangerous animals- this is a must. It is seen by some hunters as a classic sword that brings with it a tribute to the early times of man.
10. Fixed-Blade Knife.
The classic, the most reliable. For your dedicated hunter, there is no better choice. It's sharp, durable, it comes with a sheath, its long, and it's capable of fulfilling any hunting task you give it. Yet added strength and durability come at a price. The blade runs to the center of the handle, which makes it stronger, but also makes it permanently fixed in that position. Unlike the folding knife which can be slipped away- you'll be relying on that sheath for this one.
