Guide to Picking a Deer Hunting Stand for Young Hunters
It is time to take your son or daughter (or other child or inexperienced hunter) on their first deer hunting trip and you need to select a deer hunting location for them to take up stand.
One of my favorite areas to hunt is a large open ridge that comes to a point and overlooks a large wooded hollow split by a power line right of way. However for many reasons this is a disastrous place for an inexperienced kid to hunt without very close supervision. For one where the ridge ends deer like to cross the end of the point. This presents a problem as the deer cross in a location where there is no backstop for a bullet. Second, deer come up out of the woods and pause at the edge of the woods with the hollow behind them. A shot toward the deer will result in a bullet plunging into the wooded hollow without any backstop. The least important reason is that the open ridge means that hunters need to sit still and stay quiet. Deer in the woods that are still not apparent to hunter can see where the hunter is sitting and any movement will certainly be picked up.
While the above example shows a place that is poor to put an inexperienced hunter it can be used to illustrate the attributes of stand locations that are needed for the young hunter. A safe shooting perimeter is the foremost concern for a stand for those who are prone to get excited and make mistakes. Also look for a place that allows cover to shield the fidgeting and other movement common with kids. A great location for a stand for a young hunter is a hillside facing down. Deer moving in front of the stand should have a good backstop that is close to them so that other hunters will be easy to see in the background. Sitting under a tree, in brush, or shielded by a blind will help cover the movements of the youngsters. Not sitting on top of a ridge will also reduce wind that cause the kids to get the shivers quickly will make for a more enjoyable hunt.
Use some common sense when taking a kid hunting for the first time will increase the likelihood that you'll have a hunting partner for life.
