How to Hunt Ghosts

So you want to be a ghost hunter? Find out what you need in order to go on that first ghost hunting expedition- whether it is in your own home or someone else's.

Unusual activity, or paranormal activity, is often attributed to a ghostly presence or poltergeist. People have seen items falling from the ceiling (pennies falling from the Comedy Factory, for example), phones melting, glasses shaking in bars, doors opening and closing, and the list goes on and on. Ghost hunters, or ghost investigators try to determine whether paranormal activity is responsible for these unusual events, or whether there is a more unusual explanation for the activity.

Ghost Hunter Tool Kit

Ghost hunters use many things to help in their research of suspicious activity in a home or other building. Typical tools of the trade for a basic investigation include:

Notebook and pencil or pen
Measuring Tape
Extra batteries for equipment
Flashlights
Repair kit for the equipment you are using
Cameras- digital and film cameras
Video camera
Motion detectors
Voice Recorders for EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena)

This list is by no means all encompassing; many professional investigators use other items such as Geiger counters, various types of thermometers and EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) meters.

Investigating Paranormal Activity

Using items from the ghost hunter tool kit can measure paranormal activity. Typical activity caught on the equipment includes orbs from photographs, voice activity on EVP meters and catching items moving from the use of video cameras. Other tools in the kit that can be helpful but don't necessarily measure activity include measuring tape and motion detectors. Measuring tapes can measure how far an item has traveled and a motion detector can be used to secure an area and make sure that nothing alive is compromising an investigation. Unfortunately, many people like to create their own suspicious activity, and just as many are caught when trying to create this activity. If you can afford a motion detector when you are investigating paranormal activity, do so. It can help you avoid individuals that are just seeking attention and notoriety.

Rules for Investigating Paranormal Activity

Never work alone. This is for your own safety as well as to provide collaboration of psychic phenomena that may be witnessed.

Always get permission in writing when you are investigating an area.

Go into an investigation with a clear mind and body. Avoid drinking, smoking or medications prior to your investigation.

Work with people you are familiar with. You want people to keep their opinions to themselves until your investigation group can discuss the findings in private. Avoid suggesting anything during the investigation, no matter what your suspicions are. You are there to record and witness information, not add your own two-cents.

Interview witnesses separately when possible to get an idea of the scope of the paranormal activity. The activity may revolve around one particular individual in a supposed haunting.

Evaluate all of your findings thoroughly before presenting them to the individuals who are experiencing the unusual activity.

Each ghost hunter or group of ghost hunters will have their own code of conduct for their investigations, and these are but a few of the rules that may be followed.
