How to Track the Blood Trail of a Deer You Hit and Shot
Tracking a whitetail deer after you have made the shot is one of the most important part of any deer hunting trip. Follow these tips and techniques to find your big buck.
Any whitetail deer hunter will know how difficult it can be to find a wounded deer. There are so many variables to take into account to ensure you don't end up shooting the animal and then losing it. It is a question of experience as well as knowledge. Once a deer is hit, rainfall, a change in the wind direction, or other wild animals reaching the animal first can complicate recovery.
Techniques to remember
The first thing you need to take into account is where the animal is hit. You need to concentrate when you make your shot to ensure you have some idea where you have hit the animal.
Secondly, you have to have some idea of the reaction the deer gave as it was hit.
Thirdly, keep a check on where the animal runs and note any landmarks. If you have a starting point, you have a chance of following the trail.
Tracking and recovering the deer
The color of the blood and the consistency are primary factors in determining where you shot the deer and how long or short the blood trail may be.
Pink frothy blood indicates an archery or lung has been hit. Go through your aim, your shot and how the deer was standing when you made your hit. This will give you a good idea as to the short of wound inflicted. If the deer has been shot through an artery or both lungs, the pursuit can begin quickly as it will die within a very short time. If it was just a single lung that was hit, you need to allow several hours before going off in pursuit. Death won't be as quick. You can assume that if you have shot at a steep angle you will have caused a single lung hit.
Darker blood trails indicate a muscle or liver hit. The trail will only go on for a short way, about one hundred yards, before it stops. If you feel certain that you managed to hit a muscle group, your policy has to be to keep the deer moving. Do this slowly, cautiously and methodically. Decipher the blood as you go along. The deer will bed down and you need to keep it on its feet and moving. The more blood it loses, the higher the chances of you actually finding and recovering it.
With a deer that has received a liver hit your task is easier. It usually dies after a short distance, about 100 yards or so.
Dark blood signifies you are going to have problems, especially if there is evidence of paunch matter mixed in with the blood. There is not much you can do immediately so do not follow the trail immediately. You may as well leave the tracking until the following morning if you have achieved a dead-centre gut shot. If your hunt was in the morning then you can follow the blood trail that afternoon but make sure you mark where the blood trail begins. You may find you have forgotten the exact location where the shot hit when you have been waiting around for a long time. A gut shot deer will bed down. Give it time and you will be able to recover it.
If the blood trail ends, it doesn't signify the deer has escaped. You have followed the trail from where the deer was hit and it is almost certain the deer will continue heading in a straight line. Stricken deer don't use a zigzag route when hit, they will attempt to go straight. Look for clues in wet grass, frost or dew to track it. They only last for a few hours, so you need to be quick. The other factors that may help are the birds and animals. Crows, blue jays and squirrels may be able to alert you to the deer's location.
