Slate Creek Wetland, Kansas is a Hunter's and Wildlife Watchers Dream Come True
Slate Creek Wetland is owned and operated by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Ducks Unlimited.
During his time of forgetfulness of hunting, he finds himself watching the wildlife track through the area. He proceeds to call me from the area after his trek through the woods or when he arrives home about the many wildlife animals that he has seen during his visit there.
Many times I ask him, "Did you have the camera with you?" The standard answer I receive is, "I had a camera with me, but I left it in the truck." Yes, I know what some of you are thinking and saying outloud to yourselves at this very instant. I have said that to him and myself on many, many of occasions. To think of all those missed shoots that would have eased the minds of many people that would have loved to see the wildlife that he has seen there and one could say that no animals were actually harmed during one of those shoots. Okay, I just had to throw that in there. Well, maybe not but I did.
Slate Creek Wetland is inconveniently located in Sumner County south of U.S. 160 that stretches from an area from approximately one mile east of Oliver Road to 8 miles southwest of Oxford, Kansas. I say inconveniently located due to the fact that my husband has a tendency not to take the same route to get there when I am with him. So this means that at any time that I decide to travel to Slate Creek, I become lost
Now I do have to mention that the Slate Creek Wetland is nonaccessible by car and you will be doing a lot of hiking through the area. There is a mixture of habitats here for you to see. You will find woodland areas, cropland areas that the Wildlife and Parks provide for the wildlife, native prairie, and wetland or marsh areas depending on which you prefer to call this area. My husband has called the wetland areas both wetland and marshes.
The Slate Creek Wetland is a permanent home for coyotes, racoons, turkeys, muskrats, and white-tailed deer. My husband has also seen various types of ducks and geese in the Slate Creek area during the seasons that these birds migrate.
You will also be able to find sandpipers, killdeers, Wilson phalaropes, Baird sandpipers, and a few other species of birds in the area of the wetlands as well. You can also find a variety of other birdlife in the prairie area feeding.
You will also find an observation tower that is located at the number 3 parking area that is located on the northwest side of Slate Creek. You can view quite a bit of the wetland and prairies from the tower. There are three parking areas at Slate Creek for you to use while you visit the inner workings of the wildlife at Slate Creek Wetland.
