Baiting Wild Boars: A Step in Wild Boar Hunting
Baiting wild boars can actually be one of the most important steps when hunting these animals.
When choosing a bait for wild boar hunting, the list can be long. It seems like everyone has a theory on what works best. These baits can be sour corn, home brew with jell-o or beer. A good bait is usually one that is noisy, such as crunchy corn. For hogs a good bait would also be one that raccoons would not like. A mixture of diesel and corn or diesel, corn and milo would work real well. The recipe for this mixture is one quart diesel to five gallons of corn, but more diesel can be added and this mixture does not have to soak.
After deciding on a bait to use on wild boars, the next step would be to decide on which baiting device to use. There are basically four, a hole, a sewer pipe, a flexible sewer pipe and an automatic feeder. The first one is to dig a hole that is one to two feet deep and one to two feet wide. After digging the hole, pour bait in the bottom and cover with dirt then repeat until the hole is full, then put bait on top of the hole. This method allows the wild boar to work hard and long on the bait until it is gone. If the hunter keeps the hole baited the hogs should continue to return. The sewer pipe method requires a four or five inch sewer pipe with holes in it that is cut into two or three foot pieces with end caps. Fill the pipe a little more than half full with bait and anchor it to the ground where the wild boars can knock it around but they can not drag it off with them. The flexible sewer pipe method requires a four or five inch flexible sewer pipe without holes in it that is about ten foot in length. Cut 3/4 inch holes in the pipe every two or three feet then mash one end closed and wire it up good. Put a t-post in the ground then tie the open end of the flexible pipe to it. Pour bait into the pipe. If the hunter decides to use an automatic feeder, which is mounted on the bottom of a 50 gallon drum and hangs in the air or has legs to get it off the ground, the feeder will need to be set to go off two hours before the sun goes down and again at eleven pm.
Placing the baiting devices is the last step to baiting wild boars. The baiting devices should be placed in the area that best fits the method that the hunter will use. This location should be away from the wild boar bedding area and also where they can not hear, see or smell anyone. Sometimes making a trail of corn leading to the baiting device helps.
