Deer Hunting with the 7-30 Waters
Article looks at the 7-30 Waters for Deer Hunting.
The 7-30 Waters was designed by Ken Waters as an improvement over the 30-30 Winchester for longer distance shooting. The cartridge was based on the 30-30 Winchester and was designed to operate at Model 94 pressures. The smaller 7mm (.284) bullet could be driven at higher speeds than the .308 bullet used in the 30-30 Winchester. This means that the 7-30 would shoot flatter and increase the killing distance of the Model 94 and produce somewhat less recoil. While the 7-30 Waters did accomplish this goal, too many hunters had already moved to flatter bolt action rifle cartridges. Those choosing to hunt with a Model 94 stuck with the proven 30-30 Winchester and the 7-30 Waters did not survive.
Interestingly, while the 7-30 Waters never caught on in the lever action rifle it was intended for, the cartridge has gained a loyal following when used in the popular Thompson Center Contender. Midway (midwayusa.com) only offers one factory load for the 7-30 Waters and it uses a pointed bullet indicating that it is expected to be used in the single shot pistol and not in the tubular magazine rifle. Those with a tube fed 7-30 Waters are faced with having to reload to have usable ammunition. While a wide variety of bullet weights and designs exist in 7mm, only very few have the flat point needed for tubular magazine operation. Those owning Model 94 7-30 Waters rifles need to keep their fingers crossed that Hornady begins to offer a 7mm LEVERevolution bullet, but this seems unlikely.
The one factory loading for the 7-30 Waters is from Federal. Federal's factory load offers a 120 grain Sierra GameKing bullet being pushed from a rifle barrel at 2700 feet per second. The muzzle energy for this load is about 1950 foot pounds of energy. At 200 yards this 7-30 Waters load is still moving along at almost 1950 feet per second and carrying almost 1000 foot pounds of energy. (data from federalpremium.com)
The 7-30 Waters was an interesting cartridge and perfectly suitable for deer hunting, but the lack of popularity has put those few with a Model 94 in a tight spot. Those with a Thompson Center Contender chambered for the 7-30 Waters simply have a great deer hunting gun.
