Deer Hunting in the Shenandoah Valley - These Animals Are Ivy League-Educated
This is about a hunting trip last year that taught me a valuable lesson - humility.
While setting up our blinds, we decided to get comfortable, and communicated via portable radios. My friend was about 100 yards off to my left, and we had already determined where are firing lines were going to be. As I settled back in the chair that's attached to my blind, I was overcome by a stench that's far worse than what can be described by mere words. Somehow, I had the luck of setting my blind on bear dung, and there's no smell that can be as gutwrenching as it is. After moving the blind, and trying to overcome the noxious fumes that I had endured, I eased back in the chair and got my rifle in the ready position.
We heard a lot of movement in the brush, but even with all of our calling, we couldn't get the deer to investigate and blow their cover. It was absolutely freezing cold, and even with all of my layers on, I had to pull out the hand and foot warmers. Sitting in a blind, with the wind kicking it up, might not seem like the best way to spend a day. Yet I was in Heaven almost, as I just love being outdoors, and sometimes it helps you to realize how lucky you are to suffer. Then the snow came in, and crossed that line of thought that my brain was thinking. The snow blew into my blind, and with all of my weight I had to keep the blind from blowing away with me and my gear in it. There were no deer in sight, and as the sun set, we called it a day.
On the last morning, I finally had the opportunity of a lifetime. A huge buck, with more points than I could count, was coming out of the brush. Yet he was staying near the edge of the property line, and after what seemed like an eternity, he came out into the open field. Unfortunately, at the angle he was at, I could not take a safe shot. So I decided to follow him, and for thirty minutes or so I was on his tail. My heart pounded with anticipation, as I had never seen such a huge buck in my life in the woods. Adrenaline flowed at a rate that I had never seen before, and he kept looking up, but then dropped his guard to eat food off of the forest floor. As I raised up my rifle, and took the safety off, he took off in the brush. I could not in good faith take a safe shot, and I must have repeated every swear word that's known in any dictionary.
After about fifteen minutes of cussing, I actually laughed out loud. I had a grin on my face, and figured out, that the deer was so big because of how smart he was. Here I thought as a human, I was the dominant species, but I got outwitted by a creature that survived in the most dangerous of environments. As I heard gunshots off in the distance, I realized that these rural deer perhaps have an Ivy League Education, because this big buck had lived a lot of years surviving off of his natural instincts. While I still wish I could have bagged that deer, I am willing to admit that hunting teaches humility, and there's always going to be "the one that got away."
