Cardboard Turkey Blind for Hunting
Love turkey hunting? Then you'll need a turkey blind. Here's a cheap, quick way to make one.
When it comes to hunting turkey you have a much smaller target. It's important to be on the ground, but as soon as the turkeys spot you, the hunt is over. Hiding behind trees and bushes means having to jump out from behind, often causing the target to disappear before you can aim and fire.
Sporting goods stores sell something called a turkey blind. Usually made with PVC pipe and camouflage fabric, the blind is made something like a tall tent, with windows cut out from which to shoot. You can assemble the turkey blind by inserting the pipe ends into each other or unfasten the pipes to disassemble.
The turkey blind is a real investment into hunting. Sometimes costing as much as a six-man tent the structure is flimsy yet expensive. There's usually enough space inside the turkey blind to hold a couple hunters comfortably. Standing up, you can squeeze a couple more people into the blind.
There's a much simpler - and much cheaper - way to make a turkey blind. All you need is a covering to hide under and you easily make it yourself. Get a large cardboard box from an appliance store or elsewhere. The box doesn't necessarily have to be tall enough to stand but should at least be tall enough to where the hunter can sit comfortably.
Refrigerator boxes, or boxes that formerly held new stoves, are perfect for making a turkey blind. You'll also need camouflage fabric to conceal the box. A cheap source for the camouflage is a simple tarp. You'll find the tarps at department stores for little money. The plastic cover can be attached to the box or can be used to simply cover the box.
Use spray adhesive to cover all four sides - and the top - of the cardboard box. Cutting the tarp into sections, then gluing them on, works fine but you can also just set your cardboard box at the intended shoot site, then just throw the tarp over the box. You may also want to cut a piece of fabric or plastic to place on the ground so you can sit inside the box.
It's necessary to cut shooting holes out of the box, then out of the fabric. Lay the tarp over the box and cut the holes so that the tarp and box holes align. If you've glued the fabric onto the box it's much easier to cut the holes. If you don't glue the tarp onto the box you'll need to align the box holes with the fabric holes each and every time you set the turkey blind up in the woods.
Hunters can easily throw the new turkey blind on the back of their trucks and cruise to the hunt site. If needed, weight the box down with a rock, or something heavy, so the blind doesn't blow off the truck. When arriving at the site simply place the plastic on the ground, set the box on the plastic, then throw the tarp over it all.
You can also make the cardboard turkey blind collapsible. To do this cut the bottom from the box but keep the four flaps on top of the box. Cut one corner of the box so that the box will lie flat. Now glue on velcro, right at the corner you cut, so that the box can be fastened when set up. Just pull the velcro corners together, fold the flaps down, and your turkey blind is ready. Unfasten the flaps and velcro when ready to collapse the blind.
If you can't find a camouflage tarp you can purchase camouflage plastic, fabric or even canvas at large fabric stores. It may be necessary to sew several pieces together to have adequate coverage for your box. If you love hunting, but you don't love the huge investments required, cut corners and make some hunting gear yourself. The turkey blind is just one hunting requirement that anyone can easily make for themselves.
