Some Excellent Public Hunting Spots in Wisconsin
Wisconsin is filled with public land areas for hunters. We also have an abundant supply of deer all over the state.
Wisconsin is also very lucky to have all of these public hunting areas yet because a lot of other states don't have much public land. Wisconsin is also ranked number one in the country for the highest single year deer harvest. Here are some nice public hunting spots in the area that you may be interested in checking out
The Town of Rome is an area where there is a lot of deer, maybe even a few too many at times. They usually designate this area as a T-Zone which means that the hunters are allowed to get an additional anterless deer for both gun and bow season.
Rome has over 12,000 acres of land that is completely open to the public. Just a 15 minute drive away is also the Colburn public hunting area which is also abundant with deer. The town of Rome is located on the Northern Border of Adams County close to the city of Nekoosa.
Vernon County is an excellent area for white-tailed deer. The land is filled with rugged hills and deep valleys which make some great hiding spots for the hunters. There are some private owned land areas also but most of the land in Vernon County is for the public use. Vernon County is located in the Southwest part of Wisconsin.
Between Mazomanie County and Sauk County located in Southwestern Wisconsin there are some great areas to get a lot of deer also. They are in a marshy land area and close to the lower Wisconsin Riverway which makes great conditions for deer.
The Unit known as the Black Hawk Unit that is located between these two counties has 800 acres of state owned land. It is made up of oak and hickory trees and has a nice supply of deer all over the place. The land is made up of hills and bluffs. It also has many different abandoned fields and corn fields on it. The land also has an abundance of acorns and other nuts for the deer to feed on. And you know how deer love corn also! You can put your tree stand in view of some of the corn fields to get a better shot.
Duck Creek Public Hunting Grounds is 159 acres of land that is all state owned an open to the public. It is located in Poynette, Wisconsin which is just 10 miles North of Madison. The land is grassy and filled with lots of oak and pine trees. It is a great spot for deer especially with the small creek that runs through the area of the land.
Hampden Wetland Public Hunting Grounds is also located in Poynette. They are bigger than Duck Creek measuring at 227 acres of public land. This is a great marsh area that is filled with a lot of lowland timber. It is an excellent area for deer and pheasants too.
Bear Creek Fishery Area is located between Sauk and Richland Counties in Southwestern Wisconsin. This land is spread out over 798 acres of public land. It is a marsh land that is filled with deer and water fowl. It is also surrounded by a few lakes where the deer like to hang out next to.
Price County is known for having some of the best public land in the state. This County is located in the Northwestern area of Wisconsin. It is a great area for white-tailed deer. It is estimated that there are 17-26 deer per square mile on this area of land in the County. So it is a gold mine for all hunters that would like to hunt on here.
Palmquist Farms is a hunting camp area located in Northern Wisconsin. The Farm has 800 acres of forests that is filled with corn fields and ponds. The area is surrounded by 10,000 acres of county, state, and federal land that has both public and private hunting areas. This area is called a hunter's paradise. They give you a place to stay, food to eat and a guided hunt.
Located in Barron County is Sweeney Pond Creek Public Hunting Area. It is an area of land that measures at 281 acres. It is located in about 5 miles west of the city of Barron. This is a great marshy area filled with a fairly thick forest and made up of creeks and lakes. It is another one of Wisconsin's great hunting spots.
Just one mile southwest of Barron is Quaderer's Creek Public Hunting Grounds. This is another great spot. There are many creeks on this 250 acre marsh land area and the deer seem endless here. It is also a great area for birdwatchers. There are plenty of great spots here to put your tree stand to get the perfect view of some of the creeks.
These are just a few of the great hunting areas located in the state of Wisconsin. Like I said before Wisconsin is full of great hunting spots all over the state. Public hunting land is hard to come by in other states, so a lot of hunters are quitting the sport because of this. They can't find any land to hunt on. That is why the people of Wisconsin should appreciate how much public land we have available to us. It seems like no matter what county that you are in throughout the state they have at least a few nice hunting areas. Make sure you check the area out first so you feel a little bit more safe when you hunt there. This way you can get more familiar with the new area and know what your surroundings are.
