10 Turkey Hunting Tips

10 turkey hunting tips to make your hunt a successful one.

No. 1, real hens are stiff competition even for the best turkey caller. A hunter might be able to coax a gobbler away from one admiring female but not two, three or more.

No. 2, the turkey is there and the hunter is here. The easiest thing for the gobbler to do is stay put.

What's a hunter to do?

No. 1: Forget about calling. Forget about concealment. Forget about noise. Put on an orange cap or vest, get up and go barging in on the party. Get as close as you can and then rush in, wave your arms and yell. Try to scatter the group in all directions - especially, try to separate the gobbler from the hens.

Then set up at a calling station, get camouflaged and sit quietly for as long as it takes - maybe an hour or more. Ideally, at some point, you'll hear the birds trying to get back together with a flock call - the way they did when they were poults in a brood. With good calling, make sure that the flock, including the gobbler, gets back together close to you.

No. 2: Hunt all morning. Most hunters give up after an hour or two because usually gobbling activity tapers off or ends when the sun gets high.

But hunting can actually be better in late morning because hens usually go off to tend nests or lay eggs as the morning wears on and that leaves the gobbler to his own devices. Even the gobbler who was surrounded by hens when he came off the roost at dawn will often be looking for female companionship after 10 a.m.

No. 3: Don't call too much, especially when you seemingly have a gobbler coming your way. Calling induces him to respond with a gobble and to strut, and that stops his progress. Each stop introduces an opportunity to head in another direction, respond to another call or go do something else.

No. 4: Don't try to "work" the first gobble. Sometimes a turkey will respond to a sound (crow call, owl hoot, etc.) reflexively, even though it is for whatever reason unlikely to move toward any calling at that time.

A hunter should always elicit several gobbles, at least two, before committing to that turkey. Committing to a turkey that won't "work" will waste time better spent on a turkey that will "work."

No. 5: When you encounter a gobbler with hens, work with the hens. Sometimes hens can be called easier than gobblers, especially when there are a lot of hens still actively seeking gobblers. Hens in a group have a pecking order, and dominant hens can be induced to come challenge an intruder. Often, the gobbler will follow along.

No. 6: Use different kinds of calls. One kind of call won't work all the time. Many hunters use only hen yelps and in this era of heavy hunting pressure gobblers may encounter so many hunters using hen yelps that they learn to avoid same. Clucks, purrs and others of the vast repetoir of turkey noises often are more effective for the hunter.

No. 7: Don't educate, prior to the season, the gobblers on your hunting spot. Turkeys are capable of learning things and they certainly remember bad experiences, such as rushing to a call that sounded like a hen but turned out to be a person. Preseason scouting should not include trying to call up birds.

No. 8: Don't quit because the weather isn't right. All weather is right - every kind of weather has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Gobblers can be called even in a pouring rain or when it's blowing a gale. The wind that obscures turkey noises also obscures hunter noises.

No. 9: Don't get discouraged when there isn't any gobbling. Some toms are just naturally quiet. Some gobble very little, some not at all. The toms that gobble the least tend to live the longest. Many respond to good calling simply by walking up without a sound.

No. 10: Don't get sloppy. When a hunter isn't hearing gobbling he or she may lose concentration and forget sound woodsmanship. Don't call on the move, don't choose poor calling stations and don't under any circumstances ignore the rules of turkey hunting safety.
