How to Create a Post-Thanksgiving Turkey Fan Mount
This article briefly discusses the basics of mounting a wild turkey's tail feathers.
Depending on where you live, you may be planning on hunting down your Thanksgiving turkey in the woods instead of the grocery store. If so, you may want to consider making the most of every inch of the bird by creating a post-Thanksgiving turkey fan mount. My grandfather use to mount the feathers from the wild turkeys that he'd catch. Based on my time with him, creating a post-Thanksgiving turkey fan mount isn't that hard to do. Here's the skinny on how to get the job done:
Turkey Fan Mounting Supplies Needed
In order to complete this DIY project, you'll need a bottle of dish detergent, a bag of Borax, a can of white gas and a hair dryer with a cool setting. You'll also want to have a piece of foam core board, T-shaped brads, a hot glue gun and some glue sticks on hand. A wire brush, a mounting plaque, a hunting knife and a bucket are also needed in order to get the job done.
Clean the Turkey's Tail Feathers
Start by cutting off the turkey's tail feathers at the base of his tailbone. Next, gently wash the feathers using warm water and a dish detergent solution. Doing so should remove any dirt from the feathers. Afterward, allow the feathers to dry. If you are in a hurry, you may want to try blow drying the feathers with a hair dryer that has been placed on a cool setting.
Next, remove as much of the unnecessary fat, flesh and bone from the quills as possible including the oil gland. I'd suggest that you start the removal process by hand and finish it by soaking the quills in a white gas solution. The white gas will help to remove the residual grease from the quills. You can usually buy a canister of white gas through camping supply stores or hardware stores for $8 to $15. In my experience, it is a good idea to leave the quills sitting in the solution overnight.
Dry the Turkey's Tail Feathers
Once the quills have been degreased, you will want to soak them in a Borax solution overnight. The Borax will help to dry out the quill area. You can typically purchase a 5 pound bag of Borax through a taxidermy supply shop for around $13.
The next day, remove the turkey's tail feathers from the Borax solution and rub additional, powdered Borax at the base of all the feathers. Afterward, remove any unwanted feathers. Next, mount the feathers that you do want to be a part of your display on a foam core board with T-shaped brads. You'll need to leave the feathers in that position for about a month. So be sure to place it in a safe, relatively dust free area.
Mount the Turkey's Tail Feathers
By the end of the month, the base of the turkey's feathers should be completely desiccated. Continue by using a hot glue gun and clear glue to coat both sides of the exposed quills. Allow the glue to dry. Once the glue has dried, mount the turkey's feathers to a turkey tail panel or a wooden plaque. Based on my experience, a turkey tail panel will typically lighten your wallet by about $42 whereas an unfinished wooden plaque from a craft store will cost you less than $10.
