Lloyd Woodson Described by Wife as a "Loner" in Need of 'Psychological Counseling'

Federal authorities in Newark slapped Lloyd Woodson with Federal weapons charges in addition to the state charges. Police seized a cache of weapons, including a night scope and a map of Fort Drum from Woodson's NJ motel room on Monday, January 26, 2020.

One of the maps that were found in Woodson's possession was of Fort Drum, an Army base in Jefferson County, New York, a five-hour drive from the motel where Woodson, who did a stint in the U.S. Navy in 1988, was staying.

The Red Mill Inn off route 22 is where police found his cache of weapons and ammunition, including the hollow point bullets that were seized from a loaded magazine he was carrying when arrested Monday.

Motel manager, Hemant Desai said he didn't have any trouble from Woodson, but that on Saturday night, he was working the evening shift and heard the sound of a CB radio coming from Woodson's room.

"I'm glad I didn't open the door," said Desai. As for seeing any of the armament Federal authorities found in the motel room, Desai said another worker who had been in Woodson's room on Sunday did not mention seeing any weapons.

Prosecutors learned that Woodson, born in New York, had last resided in Reston, Virginia, but also found several addresses in Maryland, Brooklyn and Queens.

U.S. Navy spokesman, Lt. Justin Cole, said Woodson joined the service in February 1988 as a submarine tender aboard the USS Orion before served aboard the USS Orion, a submarine tender, before deserting 12 months later. He was captured by the Navy and discharged in August 1997.

Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest requested the help of the federal government's Joint Terrorism Task Force - a partnership of federal, state and local agencies administered by the Department of Justice - and they assigned an investigator from the FBI and another from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

Forrest would not comment if he thought Woodson had been planning an attack on Fort Drum, but did say, the suspects arsenal, which included hundreds of rounds of ammunition, some of them hollow-point bullets, and a night-vision scope.

"In our experience, for private citizens to have this type of armament is quite unusual in Somerset County," Forrest said. "If you're over in Afghanistan, it wouldn't be rare."

Reporters contacted Woodson's wife, Tracey Everett by telephone today and learned that in 2020, Everett sought a protective order against her husband in Forestville, Maryland.

Everett's court documents stated that Woodson had deserted her and their children a month before an incident outside their Maryland home where Woodson told his wife if she did not let him back in, she would be sorry.

Everett, who describes her troubled husband as "a Loner," who "Just needs psychological counseling," told reporters that she had not spoken to Woodson in over a year and had been trying to locate him in order to serve him with divorce papers. Everett said Woodson kept guns in their home - but only because he was a collector.

"He never put his hands on me," she said. "He's not that type of person," said Everett.

A shackled Woodson appeared before a Sommerset county judge today and spoke only to address the judge and did not have a lawyer present. His bond was set at $75,000 and he was returned to the Sommerset county jail.

Understandably, prosecutors are concerned since Al Queda has become more sophisticated with their recruitment of home-grown terrorists, i.e. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Northwest Flight 253 attempted bomber who officials linked to two other men accused of plotting major terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom.

New York Investigators are currently working to find out if Woodson has any ties to terrorist networks and why he possessed the map of Fort Drum.
