Beginner's Guide to Bow Hunting: Setting Your Sights

Bow hunting is a great way to feel alive. There is nothing more primal and exciting than tracking game in the wild with a bow at your side. The bigger the game, the bigger the thrill. Here is how to get started.

The first thing that you will need to do is decide how you will aim. There are two different options here. The first is to go the old fashioned way and site your arrow down the shaft. This takes a bit of practice but can be extremely accurate. The big downfall is that it will sometimes take a little longer to get on target, which can cause fatigue when holding the full draw on a bow. It is also more difficult to transition from broad heads and field tips. The other option is to use a set of sights. Sights tend to be a little costly but are well worth it. They can really mean the difference between the money shot and digging your arrow out of a nearby tree. If you use them properly you can set them to several different distances so that you do not have to do this while out in the brush. There are many different options in sights and many of them will work quite well. You will want to think of the times that you will hunt most often. If you do a lot of hunting in the early morning or late evening, you may want some glow sights or fluorescent painted ones. You can save a couple dollars if you hunt solely in the day, and can even just replace the tips if you change your mind later on. To really make these accurate you may want to also add a peep to your string as well. The peep sight is a little device that sits in the string and gives you a hole to look through. This is the cheapest part of a sight system, usually only a couple dollars, and can really improve the accuracy of any sight. This gives you a set point that is a lot more reliable than just feeling your cheek. A peep can also help to improve the consistency of your stance. Once the sight is correctly mounted, it will force you to draw to the same spot to look through it.

Before you go shooting for real, you will want to adjust your sights and ensure that they are at least close to accurate. You may need to find an archery range for this, but many towns and cities have these readily available. A couple hay bales in the backyard works well also, as long as you have a fenced yard that a stray arrow can not get through. You really do not want your neighbor's poodle as your first trophy. If you have a peep sight, you would use this set up just like a rifle. You will center the sight pin in the peep and then center that on you target. If you do not have a peep, pull the string to the exact spot on your cheek every time and just center the sight pin on your target. From here you will make the simple adjustments to your pins. The box will give you the instructions on how, but it is pretty easy to figure out. You can screw them in and out to move left and right, or up and down for height and distance corrections.

One excellent way to get your aim down and try out a moving target is to go after small game. Every state has a year round season on some sort of small game. Whether it is squirrels or rabbits, you can find something to hunt all year. These can usually be found just out of town where it is safe enough and legal to let arrows fly. After spending some time trying to plug a rabbit at twenty yards or a squirrel at thirty, you can nail anything you go after. Once you get really good at shooting the smaller game, you are more than ready and experienced to go after the big stuff. Another way to improve your accuracy is to use some Frisbees. You will need to have a partner for this one. Have someone roll a Frisbee downrange from you (make sure they are standing way off to the side) with your back turned. Turn around, find the Frisbee, sight in and shoot. Once you get good at shooting Frisbees, you can start to use smaller and smaller objects. Tennis balls, fruit, foam balls, or anything else that can roll easily will work. Another "drill" that you can use is put playing cards on your target. Go back to the shooting line and bend down hiding the target from your eyes. Quickly stand up and shoot as rapidly and accurately as possible. All of these drills will help you to get a lot more accurate and effective with a bow.

There are several more tips and tricks that can help you to become a better archer. A lot of practice is really all it takes. If you go out in the woods and just shoot at knot holes or other various natural targets, you will save a lot in targets and it can be kind of fun looking for stuff to shoot. No matter what you decide to use for targets, consistency is the key. You want a consistent draw and stance. You want everything to be the exact same every time you pull the string back. This will really improve you accuracy. Follow these steps and any more that you may find and you will be shooting apples off the neighbor kids' heads in no time, just remember to have a drunk friend nearby you can hand the bow to in case anything goes bad.
