Tips to Help Choose a Rifle Scope for a Young Hunter
Article provides how to advice to assist in choosing a rifle scope for a young hunter.
The first step is to choose a scope suited to the purpose it is intended. While the ever popular 3-9 scope might work well for stand deer hunting, it may not be ideal for deer drives, hunting with dogs, and is certainly ill suited to turkey hunting. Considering the inexperience of young hunters a lower magnification will help get the deer or other game animal lined up in the scope, especially if it is moving.
Also, make sure choose a scope to buy that is simple to use. While bullet drop compensators, mil-dot, and other extras are nice don't get a rifle scope that is complicated for the young hunter to use. Don't worry about a high dollar, crystal clear edge to edge scope. If the rifle gets dropped and the scope busted it shouldn't be an eight hundred dollar accident. Quality scopes are sold quite inexpensively by companies such as Simmons, Tasco, Bushnell and others.
Be certain to buy a scope that will mount properly on the rifle for the young hunter. Larger scopes are great for field of view and light gathering but have some drawbacks. Larger scopes must be mounted high to accommodate the larger bell and it may be uncomfortable for the young hunter to look through.
Another thing to keep in mind is to be certain that the scope is mounted at a proper distance for the young hunter. Before tightening the rings down on the mount have the young hunter look through the scope. Most scopes will slide forward and backward in the rings to allow some adjustment. Make sure that the young hunter doesn't get too close to the scope as a busted eye brow will sour a hunting experience in short order.
Finally, be certain that the young hunter know how to use the scope properly. It seems obvious to experienced hunters but young hunters may not know to keep the scope on its lower magnification while hunting in case a quick, close shot presents itself. Practice shooting the gun on various magnification settings and let the young hunter practice point the gun at targets quickly to get used to aiming the rifle with the scope.
Remember to have fun. That young hunter may have to help you drag your deer out of the woods a few years down the road!
