No Child Left Behind

No Child Left Behind(NCLB)is not only not working, it is actually hurting children. The long range implications of the lower standards advocated by No Child Left Behind are disturbing.

Mediocrity is the standard propagated by NCLB and children are being blindly led to believe that they are performing to their highest ability. Unfortunately, when they graduate from high school and enter college or the work force, they are stripped of their false sense of accomplishment by the cruel facts of life. They are faced with the decision to either continue to perform at the lowest acceptable level or take action to overcome their lack of proper preparation.

All children innately possess great potential. Yes, even children who professionals have evaluated and determined to have severe learning disabilities have huge promise. It is sad that the professionals want to limit children to the same standard used by the professionals. By lowering the bar for everyone, no one really strives for excellence and the passion for learning is replaced by apathy. If no one cares about children realizing their own potential, we should not be surprised that the children do not care.

Life is full of challenges to be faced by every one of us and our children eventually will face difficulties as well. We should not be shocked when they give up after failing the first time they are not able to conquer a problem. After all, the educational system does not require them to exceed expectations. It only requires they do the minimum so, we have a generation coming that will know how to get by without doing much.

For those whose children bring home "straight A" report cards and never crack a book, this should be very disconcerting. If children are not challenged enough, they become bored and this usually leads to laziness and disruptive behavior. Even the best behaved child can become disorderly when they become uninterested for long periods of time. Parents need to ask detailed questions about schoolwork especially when children consistently get excellent grades and have no homework. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of parents to make sure their children are truly learning.

Many advocates of No Child Left Behind would have you believe that if a particular school has a large number of students on the honor roll every six weeks that the school is performing well. This is not the case when a closer look shows the school has an inordinate amount of so called open book tests. Other concerns such as a sixth grade teacher requiring science related articles to be collected and attached to copy paper for a test grade. That project does not seem so bad until you discover not only do the students not have to present the material, they do not have to read the articles at all.

As long as the children can read at least one grade level behind, it does not appear the school is concerned about advancing reading skills. Parents need to find out the reading level of their children at an early age and monitor their progress closely. They may find their children actually slip to a lower level if they do not supplement the reading their children experiences in school. The ability to read well with comprehension is vital for children to grasp material in any subject.

While these are issues that demand attention now, the long range implications are astounding. Other industrialized countries already have a dim view of the American education system making it increasingly difficult for an American with the appropriate academic credentials to compete for career opportunities in the global market. More and more work is outsourced or completely relocated to foreign labor markets setting the stage for Americans to be the ones working for 50 cents an hour in the not so distant future.

Even if the global economy is not considered, the problem of intelligent people growing up and being ignorant is a dangerous proposition. Services performed by physicians and engineers demand a high degree of training and conscientiousness. We should not expect them to do their best if they have never done it before. Just how low can we go without endangering the livelihood and the lives of our children? In life everyone does not win all of the time and No Child Left Behind is setting up our children for failure.
