Scouting Tips for Fall Turkey Hunting
Here are some tips to help you zero in on where the turkeys will be during the fall hunting season.
Often scouting for fall turkey can be done when hunting for small game such as squirrels. Squirrel hunting is actually a great way to scout for fall turkeys as turkey hunters need to size up the amount of mast in the woods. Years with a heavy mast of nuts, turkey will often stay in the woods as they do not need to go out into fields to get food. Acorns and other nuts are a common food source of turkeys when available. However in years will a poor mast crop, turkey will need to move farther and out into the open to find sources of food. Foods that turkey will seek out when the mast crop is small are items such as grass, seed, and agricultural plantings in fields and pastures.
You also need to remember the importance of water to turkeys. Turkeys need a steady supply of water so check out likely watering holes. Areas around ponds, creeks, rivers and even livestock watering areas should be checked for turkey tracks. Look in the obvious places such as the mud around the edges of the water but also look into the water for the presence of tracks in the soft mud under the water. If you are lucky enough to find the turkey's primary food source near a source of water, with the presence of turkey tracks, then you have found a likely area to spend your turkey hunting time.
Spend some time looking over the area that you have found to turkey hunt. Look for locations to set up to hunt from and areas to scatter the turkeys if that is how you hunt in the fall.
