Deer Hunting with the .32 Winchester Special
Article looks at deer hunting with the .32 Winchester Special.
While I am not familiar with anyone who is still producing rifles in the .32 Winchester Special, the cartridge has yet to become fully obsolete. Ammunition for the .32 Winchester Special continues to cling to a small existence on the shelves of sporting goods dealers and where they are not stocked they can be ordered. Ammunition is currently being made by Federal, Remington, Winchester, and Hornady among others. But it is Hornady that might yet breathe new life into the .32 Winchester Special.
Hornady's new LEVERevolution ammunition has made a big improvement in the ballistics of numerous lever action rounds and they are offering .32 Winchester Special ammo with their new bullets. The improved ballistic coefficient of the pointed (yet safe for tube magazine) bullets makes the .32 Winchester Special a 300 yard deer gun as it extends the point that the .32 Winchester Special carries the generally accepted minimum of 1000 foot pounds of energy from short of 200 yards to 300 yards. The interest surrounding LEVERevolution ammunition as a whole might boost interest in the .32 Winchester Special specifically as well.
In regards to ballistics the .32 Winchester Special is quite similar to the 30-30 Winchester. Both are adequate for deer hunting out to 200 yards (with standard loads) with a similar bullet drop. The improved ballistic coefficient of the 30-30's bullet does give it a slight advantage in muzzle energy and about an inch less bullet drop at 200 yards (using data from Winchester.com with the 150 grain Power Point in the 30-30 Winchester and the 170 grain Power Point in the .32 Winchester Special).
However, regardless of ballistics and popularity the fact remains that the .32 Winchester Special is still an effective deer hunting cartridge. My personal attraction to the .32 Winchester Special is that is somewhat of an oddity. In a hunting cabin gun rack filled with synthetic stocked bolt action rifles an old lever action in an uncommon cartridge is sure to start a conversation.
