Harper's Bar & Grill in Northridge, California: Home Sweet Home
Totally set back in Northridge, Harper's Bar and Grill is a destination worth the trip
Anyone from Northridge or elsewhere who have been there before know exactly where I'm talking about. Harper's Bar amp; Grill (19333 Business Center Drive) is the place and I was able to go there recently and check out four exciting bands on a Saturday night.
The Harper's Bar amp; Grill website proclaims that "there is never a dull moment" when you're at Harper's. You're not kidding! My companion and I got there around 9PM when the first band was setting up and we literally could not get in. The people there knew to expect us and once we were inside we were treated kindly enough, but don't let his kind eyes fool you; you're not getting anywhere inside of Harper's when there is an event going on without proper ID and all the right clearance.
Just ask our friend Bear. He was the doorman who must not have gotten the message that I was coming. There were no apologies necessary; he was just doing his job. Once we got the green light he told us; "Make sure they know in your article, we take security very seriously."
By the looks of Harper's on the night that we were there, they don't take much else too seriously at this place. Following the first band, I surveyed the scene and this place was a wreck. I really wasn't all that concerned as the drinks flowed freely and the music rocked hard; it was then that I understood the feel good vibe of this place. There was a down-home authenticity to this rocking which has been heartbreakingly absent in big cities I've lived in since leaving my small town, hometown. The vibe and the good times at Harper's definitely brought me right back to that familiar place.
Of particular note on this night were local favorites "The Atomic Punks." When I'd mentioned earlier in the day that I was going to see a Van Halen tribute band, a friend of mine enthused how great they were. "You are going to love them! They're amazing!"
He was right but by the time they hit the stage it was well past midnight and my head was throbbing from an evening of warm draft; laughing and screaming and music.
We left Harper's Bar that night and stumbled through the chipped up parking lot and I was beaming from ear to ear. If you are looking for a good time just about any night of the week for drinks with friends, happy hour, live music, shooting pool, watching games, or throwing darts and hanging out, I highly recommend Harper's Bar and Grill.
Harper's Bar is closed on Mondays in February but is open 4PM till 2AM weeknights, noon till 2AM on Saturdays and 9AM till 2 AM on Sundays.
