What the Dogs Taught Me ...
Hunting dogs can teach us a lot about bird hunting, and ourselves. TV host Scott Linden suggests you "get high" to keep an eye on your dog, and become a better hunter and shooter.
The roughly 150 hunting dogs that have shared the screen with me on the television series Wingshooting USA (and prior series What the Dogs Taught Me and Cast amp; Blast) also chipped in their thoughts. Add a long tenure in the bird hunting school of hard knocks, and it's safe to say I'm making progress. Here's one lesson:
Get high while hunting. Now just mellow out all you flower children stuck in the sixties! Not that kind of high. I mean altitude.
You know the problem: the bell quiets, or the rustling brush stills. Or you've been flapping your gums with your hunting partner and suddenly realize there's no dog in the picture. Even a beeper may be too far away for a timely approach, risking wild-flushed birds and frustration for hunter and hunting dog.
In my case, as a gray dog in a sage-gray landscape, Buddy is hard enough to see. So when I can, I try to get above his level.
While hunting a draw, I'll climb ten feet up the ridge, walking parallel to Buddy's upwind course. If there's a nearby levee, road, rail line or dike, I'll use it. Creek beds that harbor quail have banks where a hunter can amble, one eye on the dog. Even a convenient log or boulder serves as a temporary lookout. All I'm trying to do is get taller than the surrounding brush.
From just a foot or two higher, I'll often see Buddy getting birdy well in advance of a point, or catch him locked up while I've got time to set up for a safer, straighter shot. And if you've seen my TV show, you know I need all the help I can get in the shooting department.
