Pellets Stoves: Don't Suffer from the Gas Price Blues

Be inspired to heat "green" this winter.

I grabbed a couple of brochures from the vender that day, sparking some serious investigation into my home energy situation. I live in a mobile home with an outdated kerosene furnace in upstate New York. My husband insisted that we should install a traditional wood stove, but I grew up with this kind of stove and I knew how much work really goes into it. They say wood warms you three times: cutting it, hauling it and finally burning it. I can still hear the heaving and grumbling, and see the beads of sweat popping out although the wind was cold, caused by the exertion of axe-splitting logs. I can still hear the clunking, for as a young girl my job was to stack the wood in great long rows outside. The wood then had to be transferred to a room inside so that it was dry enough for burning.

The ironic thing about this wood-burning system though, is that in between the warmth there were long stretches of bitter cold. At night the stove had to be stocked and put into a sleep mode called "banking" that left it so freezing cold when I woke up, it was as if there was no heat in the house at all. It took what seemed like an eternity to get the fire roaring again, and even longer for the heat to radiate enough to fill the room. My sister and I pretended we were California raisins (based on a popular 80's commercial), and would stand right next to the stove, scalding one side of our body and then shout, "Flip!", and jump around 180 degrees so that the backside could have a chance to thaw out. A series of flips and we were warmer, I'm still not sure, however, whether it was from the fire or from all the jumping around.

At this time, my concern for saving money went hand-in-hand with having a heat source that was environmentally friendly. The price of oil rises because it is a non- renewable resource, thus I reasoned that relying on any other non-renewable resource would eventually land me in the same predicament. Traditional wood stoves rely on trees that take years to grow large enough to harvest, plus I have concerns with clear-cutting and forest regeneration. Therefore, I was thrilled to find out that according to the Hearth Education Foundation, the fuel source for pellet stoves, the pellets, are often made from the waste byproducts of other wood products like furniture and lumber. The leftover sawdust and woodchips are compressed with massive amounts of pressure, without glue, because tree resin acts as a natural adhesive, holding the pellets together. Some pellet stoves can burn nut hulls, unprocessed shelled corn and fruit pits, as well. Besides diverting waste from landfills, pellets burn clean. Pellets have a low moisture content, often 10-50% lower than cordwood, meaning they give off a lot of heat without a lot of emissions.

Next it was fate's turn. I happened to hear about a bi-annual auction in a nearby town. I had looked into pellet stoves at retail outlets and at online auction sites like Ebay, so knew what to look for and what would be considered a good price. My husband and I stopped at the auction site to check out the goods and there, positioned in the middle of an overgrown field was a pellet stove! The day of the auction it was pouring rain and the field was a sea of mud. Although the chill ate away at our bones, the weather was a lucky break because it kept a lot of potential bidding competition at home. My husband and I got our number and staked out the stove. Like spies, we stalked anyone interested in the stove and eavesdropped on their conversations. After about two hours, the auctioneer approached. A flurry of bidding ignited, but only one elderly man hung on, and after I gave him the evil eye, he relinquished his position. We had saved over $1500 from the retail price and happily loaded up the stove.
