How to Snare Small Animals in a Trap
Are you interested in trapping small game animals? Learn how to easily make your own snares.
Nowadays most people no longer use snares but it is handy in a camping or survival situation and it was part of many of our ancestors past. Typically squirrels and rabbits were the most sought after small mammals for meat.
It is pretty easy to make a small animal snare, and you will need lengths of at least two foot. You can use a wire from any type of vehicle or home installation, but if it has insulation on it then you should strip this all off before creating the snare. Nylon rope also works excellent for smaller animals.
When you are making a snare the loop should be about four inches in diameter, which is about the size of the neck of a squirrel. You want to tie a knot to where it will tighten down on the animal's neck or leg when they pull on it. You have some knowledge of the animals and their movements to successfully set a snare, but animals are typically habitual creatures and will walk the same way every day.
Then you need to attach the other end of the snare wire with rope to a stake and you need to check your snares regularly. Typically people will set many snares in order to increase the chances of success of trapping small game animals.
When you trap a dangerous animal with a snare, you should kill it quickly and humanely, and a club usually works excellent for this, although you may want to bring a .22 pistol. There are many different types of snares that you can use in order to trap a small game animal, but they are all fairly simple and straight forward to figure out.
Remember that when you are trying to snare a small mammal, it takes a lot of practice and patience, so don't give up too easily. Figuring out how to trace animal paths is the most important part of the endeavor.
