Huntington's Disease: Personal Heartache
Watching someone you love die from Huntington's Disease is one of the hardest things a person could ever deal with.
The disease runs in my family on my mothers side, her father and 4 sisters have all passed away from this disease that attacks the neurological system. Death from the disease is a very long and drawn out process making the inevitable even harder for the family of the person who has it. Huntington's Disease can only be inherited and every person who suffers from the disease reacts differently, from mild or angry mood swings to violent outbursts.
The Huntingtons gene takes its name from physician George Huntington who described it precisely in 1872 in his first medical paper. HD has been heavily researched in the last few decades and it is one of the first inherited genetic disorders for which an accurate test can be performed. HD is caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion in the Huntingtin gene, and is one of several polyglutamine diseases. This produces an extended form of the mutant Huntingtin protein, which causes cell death in selective areas of the brain. HD's most obvious symptoms are abnormal body movements called chorea, but also affects a number of mental abilities.
HD has a broad distribution of age of onset of physical symptoms, but is usually between 40 and 50 years old. If the age of onset is below 20 years then it is known as Juvenile HD. People with HD are often mistaken for someone who has been drinking due to their slurred speech and stumbling while walking. Eventually people suffering from the disease disintigrate mentally and physically making it impossible for them to care for themselves anymore. It also becomes increasingly hard for the families of the people suffering from the disease to take care of them and generally they spend their remaining years in a nursing facility. There are leading facilities specializing in Huntington's in Massachusetts and Florida. Currently there is an estimated 8 in 100,000 people living with the disease in the world making more facilities specializing in Huntington's necessary. Scientific investigations using electronic and other technologies enable scientists to see what the defective gene does to various structures in the brain and how it affects the body's chemistry and metabolism. But, sadly, there is no cure currently for Huntington's Disease, though hopefully soon there will be so that someday another family can be spared the heartache this horrible disease brings.
I only saw first hand my aunt Terry, who started showing symptoms of the disease when she was in her early 20's, and what the disease did to her, my uncle and their children. She was a wonderful and caring person which is why it hurts to think of the last 10 years of her life knowing what the disease did to her physically, mentally and emotionally. Terry's sister Nancy passed away in 1991, Donna and Terry herself in 2001 and Arleen in 2005.
Family members who get passed for the disease often find themselves suffering from survivors guilt, depression, alcoholism and other forms of self destruction to deal with the pain the disease brings. It took my mother many years to get over her survivors guilt and realize there was nothing she could do to help her sisters. That has been the hardest part for her, the not being able to help them.
Some insurance companies will not cover the expensive tests that are associated with determining whether a person has the disease or not and the majority of the people getting tested don't want their insurance companies knowing the disease runs in their family anyways so they go into the testing paying out of pocket. The tests out of pocket can cost up to $3000 but if you get in touch with specialists in your local area they may be able to put you in touch with a group working with a Government grant in which case the cost can be reduced out of pocket considerably.
I tested negative for the disease in November 2005, but going into the testing scared me to think that everything I believed was right my whole life could turn out to be false in an instant. My mother was assured by a doctor in the 80's any children she had would be fine because she didn't have the disease. This is false, the disease can skip generations. But I had to know for myself and for how long the rest of my life was going to be.
It absolutely helps when you have a caring support system within your family and a loving husband. Sadly though a lot of people who find out they have the disease suddenly find themselves being abandoned by their families and have no general support to help them through the initial shock of finding out they are positive and the emotional needs they will have afterwards.
I can honestly say that dealing with this disease in my family has made me want to embrace every moment I have on earth even more and it has made me understand my fellow man more and I have a lot more sympathy for people knowing some people can not control their actions as the people with Huntington's can not control their's.
