The Incandescent Flash
Advantages
The incandescent flash is the perfect one to choose for capturing National Geographic-like shots. The flash permits you to capture full and vivid color of images, and it works even during nighttime. Furthermore, it has a very small effect on your image when used in daylight safari-tripping, since strong sunlight will wash out your incandescent.
Disadvantages
The incandescent flash consumes more energy compared to infrared flash. And since incandescent flash goes with traditional cameras, you will have to stock extra lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, your trigger time is slowed because of the need to create sufficient energy that will supply the flash. Expect a trigger speed difference between day and night time. Daylight speed is faster at one full second compared to nighttime trigger speed.
The Infrared Flash
Advantages
Infrared flash is the easiest way to capture in stealth mode. It is a perfect choice for hunters who want to take several shots without disturbing the subjects. Another good thing is that infrared flash is battery-friendly because it consumes less energy. This in turn, allows faster trigger speed whether you're capturing subjects in color at daytime or in black and white at nighttime.
Disadvantages
Obviously, the downside is that infrared flash captures only at black and white mode at nighttime. Furthermore, the resolution and quality of the captured image is not as full and vivid compared to an image captured with an incandescent flash. Lastly, infrared flash is prone to capturing blurry images, so it is important to keep a steady hand when shooting.
The Verdict
In choosing between incandescent and infrared light, be sure to pick the one that best fits the subject, time and location of the shoot. If you're on for a serious hunt in the wild, opt for the infrared flash since it allows stealth, colorful shots at daytime. But be sure to keep off the shaky hands in using infrared flash. On the contrary, if you're just going to shoot at random scenes anywhere and at any time of the day, the incandescent flash will do the trick. Don't forget the batteries if you're planning to use incandescent flash on long tours or journeys.
