Man Establishes a Hunting Camp for Wounded Veterans in Farmington, Missouri
My brother Larry was a wounded Vietnam vet. He could have used a place like "Chris Neal" farm out in Farmington, MO.
It didn't take long for Larry's violent streak to get worse. He spent a few months in the brig for getting in a scuffle with his commanding officer and usually got in trouble when he was home on leave. When he finally got out of the Army after getting wounded twice and serving two tours of duty over there, his behavior really didn't change. For a while it seemed like he was in trouble every couple of weeks or so. He was also very sick, suffering from the effects of Agent Orange, his wounds, and a bleeding ulcer that would eventually lead to two major operations and ultimately his death from pneumonia.
I was very surprised by how little the VA tried to help. He received substandard medical care in a dreadful hospital and that was about it. The doctors botched the first 12-hour operation he had there and he ended up having a second major surgery just to correct the first. He still had his family though, and a couple of buddies who had also served over there. (He met them in a bar, all of the friends he had while he was there had been killed.) About the only thing that would relax him was the hunting and fishing trips he took out to Busch's Wildlife with his friends. It was like there was something about being in the woods without a sniper or booby trap trying to kill him that made him feel at home and at ease.
That's why I read a recent story in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, (www.stltoday.com), with great interest. Anyone who follows the news knows that many of the soldiers returning from the war in Iraq face the same problems that the returning Vietnam vets did. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome they call it, as well as the physical injuries that they have to overcome. But a man named Bill White from the town of Farmington, Missouri (south of St. Louis on interstate 55) has decided to do something to help. After losing his son in Iraq in 2020, he began reminiscing about the many hunting trips he had taken with his son when he was at home. He then bought a farm near Farmington where injured soldiers could come to hunt, fellowship with each other, and hopefully begin to heal.
He named the camp "Chris Neal" farm, after his son. The 146-acre property includes a three-bedroom house. Last month, White hosted his third group of veterans during deer season. They didn't kill anything, but White says that's not the point. Just traipsing through the woods or sitting around the campfire can sometimes do a lot of good, not just for the vets, but for the grieving father too.
