A Review of the Barska Blackhawk 60 20-60x60mm Spotting Scope
This is a review of a scope that came with a tripod and two carry bags for not much more than $100!
I had given my husband a Bushnell telescope many years ago. He found it hard to use and eventually the tripod broke. While traveling we saw a lot of people using spotting scopes. I did a lot of research about telescopes versus spotting scopes. It seemed that for our purposes (looking at ships, seals and birds on the ocean; looking at animals in National Parks) a spotting scope was the way to go. If you are only using this for land than it seems the spotting scope is what is recommended. If your purpose is for astronomy than you'll want a telescope though scopes can be used for that purpose. Our telescope had about five "things" that came with it. Even with the manual we had no idea how to use it so it really was dysfunctional. In addition everything was upside down and more importantly I liked the fact the scope would be portable.
About the Scope
For my husband's birthday I bought the Barska Blackhawk 60 20-60x60mm which seemed to be what we would need for our purposed. In addition the price was right at about $110. www.barska.com. I found it at amazon.com.
I liked that the Barksa Blackhawk 60 came with a tripod. Some don't and the cost of a tripod can be high. We easily put the scope on the tripod with a knob under the scope. I also liked the small size of it. It's a little less than 14 inches long and on the tripod is about 14 inches high.
I liked that it came with a hard case which looks like an instrument case as well as a soft case.
Now we have it and use it all the time. It sits on my husband's side of our long desk in MA. The tripod has a lever on the left side which moves the scope up and down but not side by side. So given the choice a better tripod would have been nice. The tripod doesn't allow the scope to go side to side so we pick up the scope to move it to the left or right. Luckily it is very light coming in at about 2 pounds.
The scope is covered with rubber to protect it and absorb shock. It is also comfortable to hold. It's also waterproof which for us is great since we are on the water and often hike through water. It also has fog proof protection.
There is a focus knob on the top of the scope.
The eyepiece which is turned to change the focus from 20 all the way to 60 has a cover to protect it. It also has a nice feature and that called an extensible sunshade. This comes in handy by our window.
There is a plastic piece that covers the lens for protection. I take that off and pull a sleeve out covering the lens like a shade.
I have found the view through the scope quite clear in all lighting conditions.

This was a great gift for my husband (us). It serves our needs. We may buy a better and higher tripod for our travels but for now the tripod that comes with this terrific scope works.
