Top 5 Dove Hunting Tips for First Timers

This article briefly discusses several dove hunting tips that are geared towards new hunters.

In some parts of the country, dove season is almost upon us. Take the State of Georgia for instance. Dove season is expected to start in early September 2020. With that said, I thought that I would share a few of my dove hunting tips with those that plan on hitting the woods for the first time this fall. Here they are:

Select the Right Weapon

First and foremost, do yourself a favor and select a decent gun. Personally, I'd recommend that you consider investing in a gas autoloader because they allow you to rapidly fire three times. In my opinion, having the ability to shoot quickly is crucial because of the speed at which the doves tend to disappear after the first shot.

Select the Right Ammo

Second, choose your ammo wisely. I'd suggest that you consider paying a bit more and purchasing diminutive, premium hunting loads or premium target ammunition. In my experience, a number eight shot size tends to work well. It seems to have just enough pellets per charge and the weight to get the job done effectively and efficiently.

Select the Right Hunting Spot

Third, I'd suggest that you scope out your dove hunting spot in advance. Oftentimes, the best dove hunting spots are those that are located along the dove's natural flight path or near its food sources. In my experience, doves are likely to be found near grassy fields, grain crops, watering holes, standing dead timber and breaks in a tree line. It is also a good idea to pay attention to when the doves traditionally visit those areas. That way, you can make sure that you are set up in the right dove hunting spot at the right time of day.

Wear the Right Clothes

Fourth, make sure that you wear the right clothes. Select your hunting outfit based on the colors naturally found in your hunting area. Using a hunting blind can also prove productive given the situation. You'll also want to consider investing in a pair of shooting glasses that come with a variety of interchangeable lenses. In my experience, the shooting glasses will help to increase your chances of seeing the doves before they see you.

Target Practice

Fifth, you'll want to take some time to target practice in advance of dove hunting season. I'd suggest that you practice shooting clay pigeons because it gives you a similar sized target. By practicing, you'll be able to get a feel for how your gun fires. It is also likely to help you increase both the speed and smoothness of your swing.
