Letterboxing: A Family Adventure

Who doesn't enjoy the thrill of hunting for buried treasure or following a string of clues to solve a mystery? That's what a letterboxing adventure is all about, the search for hidden treasure and the solving of a mystery.

Letterboxing, as the legend goes, began in England in 1854 when a Victorian gentleman placed his calling card in a bottle and then slipped it into a hiding spot along the banks of Cranmere Pool in Dartmoor, England. Visitors who stumbled upon his hidden bottle started leaving self addressed postcards and notes in his jar asking the next visitor to mail the card back to them and letterboxing was born. In the 1970's there were 15 letterboxes located in Dartmoor National Park and today there are an estimated 3,000 to 10,000 boxes hidden within the 365 square miles of the park.

Letterboxing made its appearance in the United States after the April 1998 edition of Smithsonian Magazine The magazine published an article about the history of letterboxing in England. A small group of individuals, who were fascinated by the article, banded together to form an online community called Letterboxing North America. This group of volunteers set up an online forum and Web page as a clearinghouse for letterboxing information in the U.S. Their Web site includes a listing of letterbox clues and directions throughout the United States.

Letterboxes are hidden on public property such as parks and recreational facilities and are generally just off the beaten path. Don't be surprised to find out that there is a letterbox lurking in your favorite park. To begin your adventure you will need to locate a letterbox location in your area. This can be found on any number of the letterboxing Web sites. Do an Internet search for letterboxing and follow one of the many links.

Next, you will need to print out the directions or clues that the letterbox owner has posted on the site. Read the clues carefully before you start your adventure. Some locations are not easily accessible for young children or may require a very long hike to reach the hidden location. It is suggested that you begin with a location that is familiar to you. Some letterbox owners like to make their clues very mysterious while others are straightforward. For the beginner it is suggested that you try your hand at finding a letterbox with easy to follow clues and straightforward directions in a location that is familiar to you.

The basic materials that you for your first letterboxing adventure should include: a notepad (to record your adventure), a rubber stamp and inkpad or a sticker (to record your visit to the letterbox in the logbook), a pen or pencil (to leave a short note to the letterbox owner) and the printed out clues to the letterbox's location. Some optional equipment might include: a compass (some clues give compass headings and paces instead of landmarks and trails) and a map of the area. Walking shoes, appropriate clothing, drinking water and a snack for the trail is also suggested.

While on the trail don't forget to enjoy the scenery with your family. Watch for birds and other small wildlife along the way. Notice the wild flowers and trees along the trail. Letterbox owners usually place the box in a location that is special to them for one reason or another. The journey is half of the adventure.

Once you have successfully followed your clues and found the hidden letterbox it's time to leave your mark. Stamp the logbook inside the letterbox with your personal mark and feel free to leave a quick note to the owner. Don't forget to mark the date of your visit. Most letterboxes contain a stamp left by the owner so the visitor can mark their personal logbook. Enjoy reading all the other entries in the logbook but remember to carefully reseal and replace the letterbox back into its original resting place so others can enjoy the discovery.
