Top 5 Features to Look for when Buying Cold Weather Hunting Pants
This article briefly discusses five features that hunters should look for when purchasing hunting pants for the fall and winter seasons.
Are you a first time hunter that's planning on buying a few pairs of hunting pants this fall? If so, you may want to peruse my list of the top features to look for when purchasing cold weather hunting pants. Here it is:
Superior Fabrics
First of all, hunters should make sure that their hunting pants are made with a superior fabric. After all, a pair of hunting pants' fabric plays a role in a hunter's comfort as well as his hunting success. Inferior fabrics allow cold air and moisture to reach a hunter's skin. Inferior fabrics also have a tendency to make noise when a hunter walks. In addition, poor quality fabrics tend to break down quickly during extended use.
In order to avoid those problems, a hunter's base layer of cold weather clothing should be made of a synthetic, breathable material that reduces odors as well as repels bacteria and moisture. His or her insulating layer of clothing should be made of a quick-drying, breathable material that locks in body heat and absorbs little moisture. His or her outer layer of clothing should be wind resistant and have a waterproof rating of 15,000 mm or higher. Fabric choices that I would recommend include fleece, 3M Thinsulate, GORE-TEX and wool.
Superior Construction
Second, hunters should inspect a pair of hunting pants' construction because it also influences a hunter's comfort and the overall durability of the pants. When it comes to construction, it is essential that the seams and hems are sealed and reinforced. In my experience, if a pair of hunting pants' seams and hems is not sealed and reinforced, cold air and moisture has a better chance of reaching the hunter's skin. Since much of a hunter's time is spent sitting in tree stands and tracking game, reinforced knee and seat areas are also helpful in ensuring that the hunting pants last over time.
Appropriate Insulation Level
Third, hunters should think about how much insulation that they want in a pair of cold weather hunting pants. The amount of insulation that a hunter should look for in a pair of hunting pants will vary based on where and when he or she plans on hunting. In general, hunters in colder climates should consider investing in pairs of hunting pants that have substantial insulation.
Camouflage Design
Fourth, cold weather hunters should select a pair of hunting pants with a camouflage design that matches his or her hunting terrain. For example, hunters that plan on hunting in the snow should purchase hunting pants with a snow camouflage design. Hunters that plan on hunting in the early fall may want to select a camouflage design that matches the fall foliage in their area instead.
Ample Pockets and Belt Loops
Fifth, hunters should consider purchasing a pair of cold weather hunting pants that has ample pockets and belt loops to accommodate all of their hunting essentials. A pair of hunting pants with an adjustable waist band is also nice to have because it allows a hunter to comfortably wear layers of additional clothing on extremely cold days.
