The Boykin Spaniel: Excellent Family Pet and Versatile Hunting Dog

Boykin Spaniels are calm and well behaved at home but with enough energy to make an outstanding hunting dog. Versatile enough to retrieve ducks in the morning and flush quail in the afternoon, they are loyal, highly trainable and eager to please.

The Boykin Spaniel may be the most versatile dog you've never heard of. Boykins are calm, friendly, great with kids and loyal to their owners. Put them in a duck blind or on an upland hunt and they become a focused and energetic hunting machine.

Boykin Spaniels are equally at home retrieving ducks in the water, flushing quail in a pine forest or retrieving doves from an upland field. They are highly trainable and can be taught to hunt turkey, deer, rabbit, squirrel and a variety of other game.

Around the house, these little brown dogs are calm and obedient, tolerant and patient around children and eager to please their owners. As with any working dog, they require some exercise, though not as much as typical hunting dogs, and are happiest when they have a job to do. If you don't hunt, a Boykin can make a great agility dog, service pet, or just a general companion that will impress your friends and family with its tricks.

Boykin Spaniels are one of the few purely American dog breeds. Originally bred by a South Carolina sportsman named L.W. "Whit" Boykin in the early 1900's, the original Boykin was crossed with breeds such as the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Springer Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel and American Water Spaniel to be a multipurpose hunter that was small in stature.

Male Boykin Spaniels grow to about 16-18" tall and weigh 30-40 pounds while females are typically 14-16" tall and weigh 25-35 pounds. Their coats are medium length and liver brown in color. Tails are normally cropped at 1/3 length when they're pups to minimize chances of injury in the field. Boykin Spaniels are similar to Springer Spaniels in stature and build.

Like most spaniels, Boykins are generally considered a flushing dog, which means they flush birds from hiding on an upland field rather than holding and pointing as dogs like Weimaraners and English Pointers are trained to do. Like most hunting breeds, if you want a dog to hunt with, it's best to find one from a bloodline of proven hunting dogs. This will provide some assurance of the prey drive, scenting ability and general temperament of your dog, allowing you to develop him into a useful hunting companion.

The Boykin Spaniel is an intelligent, trainable, loyal breed that will make a great house pet as well as an excellent hunter. Small enough to live in an apartment but with a big enough heart to work or play all day, they are the rare combination of high energy hunting dog and calm, well behaved indoor dog. As a somewhat unknown American bred dog, a Boykin Spaniel is sure to have people asking, "Hey, what kind of dog is that?"
