Pack Dogs Hunting Deer: A Florida Tradition
As a young man this experience made a lasting impression on me. Since that day I have totally avoided this type of hunting, going as far as not to hunt at all if pack hunts were even near me.
With rural populations in Florida exploding, ever increasing complaints are being made by homeowners. I guess if I woke up in the early morning and saw a couple dozen dogs foaming at the mouth speeding across my property and thru my garden, I would not be a happy camper either. In fact, I remember the first time I witnessed this hunting technique - it scared the heck out of me. I had only hunted open woods along the east coast prior to this hunt. You know find a tree and wait. Having just passed my drivers test and obtained my license, well you know, Road Trip! A friend of mine and I headed to north Florida, panhandle country, with our permits and set up camp. The next morning about one hour before sunrise we set out to hopefully find an open area to still hunt. About 45 minutes into the woods we found a good spot and settled in for the morning hunt. Looking back it's laughable; but, about 10 minutes later all Hell broke loose! Again, there was just the two of us in the middle of the woods. We started hearing All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) screaming all around us, then loud speakers, bull horns, and Citizen Band Radios (CBs) blaring out instructions. Group A go to road A. Group B go to road B. Dog handlers go to point C. Kick off time in 10 minutes. Report all kills to John Doe on channel 10. Did I mention the single seat helicopter over head spotting deer for the hunters. We had no idea what was happening! Although quite alarmed we firmly held our positions.
Enough said, about 15 minutes later our whole tranquil world exploded. We looked up into our clearing and saw an entire herd of deer: yearling's, does, spikes, and hugh antlered bucks bearing down on our position at break neck speed. We got to our feet looking franticly for an escape route, none available! When the herd was about half way across the clearing, what seemed to be a battalion of rampaging dogs exited the wood line and entered the clearing hot on the herds heels. These canines were foaming at the mouth, madly howling, and falling all over each other - we scrambled to get a big tree between us and the incoming onslaught of animals. After they passed I swear my friend was as white as a bed sheet. I have to believe that I was also. Without a word spoken we unloaded our weapons, hiked back to camp, broke camp, and drove home. A day I will never forget!
Back to the dying tradition of pack dog deer hunts in Florida. Stricter license application requirements, vanishing territory to hunt on, increased regulatory enforcement, and private home owner complaints are putting this endangered tradition on the fast track to extinction. I say good ridings!
