Beginner Tips for Successful Deer Hunting
This article is designed not for those who have grown up hunting, but for those who are new to the sport who do not have a mentor to get them started.
There are plenty of information sources on guns and bows for the beginner deer hunter so I won't cover them in depth here. If you are looking for a good deer gun I suggest a lever action 30-30 Winchester. Picking either a gently used Winchester Model 94 or Marlin 336 will be a find rifle to start deer hunting with. However, there are a wide number of calibers and rifles that will fit the bill quite well.
The most important factor to successful deer hunting for beginners is to set up in a good location. Here are some things to look for. If you live near your hunting area simply walk it as much as possible. You will quickly find places that deer seem to be. This is a great place to hunt. If you are hunting the land blindly here are some tips. Agricultural plots (standing or harvested) draw deer. Brushy areas near open fields are often used by deer to travel from one place to another. Look for deer paths in the brush and set up to the side where you can listen and watch. If you are hunting in solid forest, check out the mouths of hollows for deer trails and other sign. Determine which trees are still producing mast (acorns, etc.) and keep an eye on them. If water is scarce in your area, look for places where deer come to streams or ponds to drink.
Obviously you need to find a hunting spot from where you will be able to see deer. But this isn't the only concern. You also need to be able to take up stand in a place where you aren't clearly obvious to the deer. Barns, sheds, ditches, brushy fence lines, ground blinds are all great for concealing your presence. Tree stands are a popular for deer hunting but there use is not necessary, but are of great use to bow hunters.
Regardless of what you might read in other places fancy equipment, expensive guns, and about everything that is sold is not necessary. A solid rifle that you can shoot and a good knife are about all that is needed. Find a good spot, sit tight, and you will be on your way!
