Field Review of the Winchester Model 70
Article reviews the Winchester Model 70 for deer hunting and other purposes.
Though this is a basic review designed for hunters who are unlikely to shell out big money for a pre 64 Model 70, here are some of the major differences. Pre 1964 Model 70 used a controlled feed action. This means that the cartridge is firmly held by the bolt from the process of getting picked up out of the magazine. Controlled feed is a good feature, particularly when hunting dangerous game, but a lack of it is not the end of the world for most hunting. The ejector was also changed to a less substantial design. Other changes were largely cosmetic, cheaper materials and a newer stock design that many did not like. The stock would be reworked somewhat, but the fans of the pre 64 models were still not impressed. While the latter models were certainly less well made in some ways, they are still fine hunting arms. The particular model that I have used the most was made in the late 1970's and is still going along just fine. Winchester would in the 1990's introduce the Winchester Model 70 Classic and feature a return of the controlled feed and a newly designed stock. I have not fired a recent Winchester Model 70 made in South Carolina, but they are quite similar to previous models for the purposes of hunting. Don't let all of this confuse you, all of the Model 70's in good condition will make a fine hunting rifle.
Though the Winchester Model 70 that I have used the most is chambered for .270 Winchester, the Model 70 has been made in various calibers. Common hunting calibers that are currently produced include the .243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, 30-06, and .300 Winchester Magnum. Also available are the .270, .300, and .325 Winchester Short Magnums. Used Model 70's can be found in a wide array of chamberings to please about anyone.
The Winchester Model 70 is a great rifle in the field. The bolt moves smoothly with less slack than many other rifles (meaning less noise), points well, and is an accurate rifle. There is little to comment on the workings of the Model 70, except for perhaps the safety. The three position safety located near the bolt handle is a bit obtrusive, which is actually good. In the rear position the safety locks the bolt and the trigger. In the middle position the trigger is still locked but the bolt will operate. In the forward position the rifle is ready to fire. The large size of the safety makes the safety easy to operate with gloves or freezing fingers in the field. The safety also stays in the middle position well instead of sliding freely like many rifles that I have used. I am more used to a middle of the tang safety mounting, but the Winchester safety is easy to get accustomed to using.
The Winchester Model 70 has stood the test of time through many changes in design and locations of manufacturing. Any product that has done this for so long obviously deserves the consideration of anyone looking for a new rifle. While there are many fine rifles on the market and on the used gun racks, the Model 70 might have some advantages over the others. Any gunsmith should be familiar with the Model 70 and parts should always be readily available. Plenty of information also exists to squeeze out extra accuracy from the rifle both online and in print. As many hunters already know, you can't go wrong with a Winchester Model 70.
