How to Create Motion in Your Duck Decoy Spread

One of the keys to consistent duck hunting success is your ability to create realism in your decoy spread. In this article we will share with you how to create the illusion of movement in your decoy spreads even if there is no wind.

Why is decoy movement and water motion so important to your success? Simple, live ducks and geese don't just sit motionless in the water. They create ripples, wakes, waves, and splashes as they swim, loaf, and feed.

If you've ever had the opportunity to observe ducks or geese on the water during a calm day you'll notice these things. One of the first things you'll notice is the wake that is created in the water as the ducks or geese are swimming. Secondly, you'll notice are the ripples created in the water by ducks or geese while they are loafing in the water. The third thing you'll notice is the large amount of splashing, churning, and thrashing that takes place when ducks or geese are tipping up and down while feeding.

As pointed out in the first paragraph, creating this life-like illusion can become quite challenging when you are hunting over water in one of the following conditions:

Little or no wind

Small timber holes

Small potholes

Protected areas that create slack water

Icy areas

Fortunately, today there are a number of simple, easy, and trouble free ways to create movement in your decoys and motion on the water that will create a life-like illusion.

Here's a list of different ways and products that you can use to create the realism you need in your decoy spreads while hunting over water.

Kicking and thrashing your legs when standing in the water

Pulling decoys connected by a jerk-string

Swimming decoys

Shaker decoys

Paddling decoys

Fluttering decoys

Quiver Magnets

Spinning feet decoys

Tipping decoys that shoot water

The Mallard Machine

These products can create life-like and realistic appearance your decoy spread when you're faced with challenging hunting conditions as listed above.

Here's an example of how we used movement and motion in our decoy spread to change a potential poor day into a great day.

We were hunting a large reservoir late in December in the Central Flyway. There were numerous birds in the area but we were faced with a stationary weather front that had temperatures in the high 60's and water that was as smooth as glass with the lack of wind.

Having four other hunting groups in our vicinity, everyone's spread looked like a group of lifeless blobs floating on the water, with the exception of ours. The movement and motion created in our spread by the use of motion decoys caused our spread to stand out and become alive.

As the birds came back from feeding around 9:00 a.m., we were able to put 100's of ducks on the water and into the kill zone. Within an hour we had a three-man limit, which consisted of 15 drake mallards and 3 drake pintails. At the same not another boat fired a shot.

When we arrived back in the parking lot a gentleman who was in his 70's, and had been hunting the reservoir for almost 60 years, told us he had never witnessed anyone ever decoy ducks like that on such a calm day.

So whether you use any of the products or methods for creating movement in your decoys and motion in the water that were listed above or you have your own system; the important thing is to create a realistic decoy setup through the use of decoy movement and water motion.
