Elk Hunting Guide
Introduction to elk hunting and how to choose an elk hunt.
Only male elk have antlers, which begin growing in the spring. Unlike many of their deer cousins, elk shed their antlers each winter. Elk possess some of the largest antler racks among deer species, growing as large as 4 feet long and weigh nearly 40 lbs. Elk antlers are produced from a specialized bone in the top of the skull, and can grow at an accelerated rate of almost an 1 inch per day before mating season. Current research has indicated that the rapid growth and subsequent loss of antlers is related to the rise and fall of testosterone levels. As the breeding season grows near, their testosterone levels rapidly increases, causing the antlers to grow extremely quick. Once the breeding season is completed, the levels of testosterone decrease significantly. This drastic reduction in testosterone causes the antlers to completely fall off or shed around the early winter. While actively growing, elk antlers are covered with and protected by a soft layer of skin called velvet. The velvet covering is shed in the summer when the antlers have fully matured.
Mature elk usually stay in separate groups of males and females until mating season. During mating season, which is also called the "rut", herds co-mingle as bull elk contend for females as well as run rival males away. Once male elk have mated with a female, she becomes part of his harem, and he will defend her from other males. Rival bulls challenge opponents by bellowing and bugling. Rival males will also engage in a sort of stare down ritual where they walk side by side at the edge of a herd. This is done so the bulls can size up a potential opponent to evaluate their antlers, body size and fighting prowess. If neither bull backs down at the end of the parallelling, they engage in a contest of antler wrestling.
Elk commonly cover large areas of territory so be prepared to cover some ground during a hunt. I'd recommend that you prepare yourself physically before the hunt, or you may have some difficulty. Also realize that some sub-species of elk inhabit high elevation areas so you may also be faced with some high altitude hunting. As mentioned above, elk are large, hearty animals; and will require a powerful rifle round to take down cleanly.
