Bow Hunting Season - What Not to Wear
He's off to battle dressed in camouflage clothing, boots, and knit cap. His weapon and night vision goggles completes the outfit. Is this Iraq or perhaps Afghanistan? No, it's just my neighbor out for another season of bow hunting.
I know we need a hunting season. No argument there. My ravaged gardens and gnawed upon cedar trees prove that. There's too many deer and not enough food.
A couple of years ago, in my attempt to become a true Michigander and feel like one of the gang with my bow hunting friends, I agreed to accept their offer and go on my first safari, as I like to call it. Of course, being the fashionista that I am, I wore 100 percent cotton pants, a matching sweat shirt, and an Alpaca poncho to die for. Which I almost did. But I'll get to that later. I then, according to my friends, reeked of perfume and scented deodorant.
This is not what you do when you go bow hunting or any kind of hunting for that matter. First, I'm told, you should not wear 100 percent cotton clothing of any kind if you can help it. Cotton traps sweat and sweat starts to smell, if you know what I mean. That smell lets the deer know you're there and you're after them. They know that much. Second, you should not use any scented laundry detergent either. The deer can pick that up a mile away. Lastly, skip the perfume and scented deodorant.
And now getting back to my dying comment. After sighting several deer from afar and watching them scamper away for what seemed to me to be no good reason at all, all eyes rested on me, as my friends began to pick up my scent. They did not seem happy. It was all I can do to hightail out of there and save my own hide.
