Five Strategies to Improve Your Duck Decoy Spreads

Every duck decoy spread can use a little sprucing up to improve its look and feel to passing ducks. This article gives 5 tips to enhance your spread.

Create A Landing Zone That Is Easy For The Ducks To Use

The ultimate reason for a decoy spread is to entice ducks to land in or next to your decoys to allow for high quality shots. To that end, make sure that you have a well defined landing zone for the ducks to see and land in. Remember that ducks prefer to land into the wind whenever possible, so set up your landing zone to funnel them to a spot close to your blind that allows them to land into the wind. Getting ducks to land close is paramount in increasing your number of ducks taken.

Add Motion To Your Spread

Nothing looks more unnatural to ducks than a spread that is devoid of motion. This is especially true on those calm days in the duck blind. To combat this there are several ways to add motion to your spreads. The most obvious way most people go is with a spinning wing decoy. These mimic a duck landing. Other popular and effective ways are battery powered swimming decoys, a goose or duck flag similar to those used by goose hunters in the field, and the quiver magnet. However, perhaps the easiest and cheapest method is the tried and tested jerk cord. Simply attach a string to a decoy, run it through a weight and bring the string back to the duck blind. When ducks make their pass tug on the string and you have ripples in the water. Ducks love it and it will do wonders to your spread.

Supplement Your Spread With Confidence Decoys

In addition to duck decoys, it is always a good thing to add some confidence decoys to set the ducks' mind at ease when they are approaching your spread. This is a great way to set your spread apart from all the neighboring duck hunters set up on your local slough. Simply add in a few of these decoys and the ducks will be more likely to come close for a good shot. Great confidence decoys include coots, great blue herons, swans, and even goose decoys. Just remember that in order for them to work in your favor, the species you are adding to your spread is common or at least known to frequent the area you are duck hunting.

Match The Size Of Your Spread To The Ducks

This step takes a bit of scouting before hand to implement but can pay off in spades when utilized correctly. Watch to see how the ducks in the area you are hunting naturally congregate. Are they generally set apart in small groups of 2-10 ducks or are they wont to be next to their closest 100 buddies. This can also change with the weather pattern. In warm patterns common early in the season ducks often are loosely arranged with small family groups and similar spread about. A smaller decoy spread can work wonders in this situation. Later in the season when you are targeting those diving ducks it will likely be colder and the ducks will naturally form large flocks. In this case breaking out every decoy you have and setting them out is the ticket. Just remember you are trying to mimic the reality of your duck hunting spot whenever possible, so if you can get some clues from the ducks themselves all the better.

Make Sure The Decoys In Your Spread Match Your Location

This is a small detail that most people overlook. When you go to your typical duck slough you will see decoy spread after decoy spread chock full of mallard decoys. Don't get me wrong, these can work great, but if you can fine tune your spread to include ducks that are common in the area and are what you are targeting while hunting even better. Watch the skies as you are scouting or hunting. What ducks do you see that aren't in your spread? Great additions include wood duck, widgeon, teal, and especially goose decoys. If a particular species of duck or goose frequent your area, it will be all the more appealing to passing ducks if they are including in your duck decoy spread. It may be in your best interest to remove all the mallard decoys from your spread and go with all other species to give the ducks a different look.

As can be seen there are many ways to set your duck decoy spread apart from other hunters. Using any or all of the tips above will improve the look of your spread and set you apart from the competition. Often it is the little changes that make the most impact on a successful duck hunt.
