Ten Goose Hunting Tips and Techniques

Here are ten tips for hunting geese successfully.

Nighttime is a good time to hunt for geese. They like that it's quiet and that their predators are asleep. This makes them feel safer and, therefore, they are easier targets.

Goose Hunting Tip #2: Large Bodies of Water

Lakes are good hunting grounds for geese. If geese are local to the area, they likely have more than one lake or river inlet where they like to spend time.

Goose Hunting Tip #3: Corn and Grain Fields

Since geese spend so much time migrating, they spend a lot of time eating to power up for their trek. Check corn fields and grain fields for geese. Those that have been harvested and are less than 5 miles from a large body of water (see tip #2) are your best bet.

Goose Hunting Tip #4: Set Up Your Blinds and Decoys Near Water or Fields

Because geese so often frequent large bodies of water and harvested grain fields nearby, both of these places are excellent spots to place your decoys, set up your blinds and practice your calls.

Goose Hunting Tip #5: Make Friends With Local Farmers

Unless you own grain fields in the heart of goose hunting country, you will need to ask the permission of some local farmers for the use of their fields to hunt. Some may even go so far as to help you out with scouting, giving you the general times and locations to target during your hunt.

Goose Hunting Tip #6: Track Locations at the Right Time

Grain fields and large bodies of water will yield more geese during your hunt depending upon the time of day. For example, geese like to eat first thing in the morning; therefore, it is better to set yourself up early at grain fields to wait for them. On the other hand, geese tend to return to large bodies of water at night, so if you're doing nighttime hunting, then choose your spot accordingly.

Goose Hunting Tip #7: Keep Them Guessing

If you have time to invest a few days or a week into your goose hunting trip, then make sure to move around. Don't keep your blind or your decoys in one place. Allow the geese to get comfortable thinking you are in one location, and then catch them off guard when you show up in a new place unexpectedly. In the same way, you'll want to choose different spots to hunt rather than returning to the same field or body of water each day.

Goose Hunting Tip #8: Camouflage

Camouflage is crucial to the success of your goose hunting trip. Everything must be camouflaged: your blind, you, your gun. Take care to make sure that you always blend in with your surroundings.

Goose Hunting Tip #9: Blinds

Though building a blind is the best way to camouflage yourself as you stake out the geese, if you are in an area where there is enough coverage (i.e., corn fields that are six to eight feet high), then you may not always need a blind. In general, though, a blind is your best bet to keeping your location a secret from the geese and increasing your success.

Goose Hunting Tip #10: Decoys

There are a number of different formations that you should try when placing your decoys: a U shape, a J shape or an X shape. The decoys can be as close as five yards from your blind, but make sure there is enough space between each of them so that there is room for the geese to land.
