Goose Hunting Tips and Techniques in New York State
Goose hunting tips and techniques in New York.
If you have never gone goose hunting, your first step is to go to your local Department of Environmental Conservation website. In my state, in order to hunt at all you must first take a NYS Waterfowl Hunter education class. You must pass this class to get your license. There are classes in every part of the state, by region. Find a class by going to your local rod and gun outlet, or county clerks office. Your state may be different. Calling your county clerks office in other states will be a good place to start. The license costs $19, you will also need to get a duck stamp, which costs, $15, this will allow you to hunt large and small game birds. For Goose hunting in new york, as in other states you will also need to register with HIP, in your state. This is a mandatory requirement in all states for goose hunting, and hunting Migratory Game Birds. By participating you are helping to monitor the birds, and establish hunting regulations, and daily bag limits.
The most expensive equipment you will need to buy is your gun. An ideal gun for goose hunting is a 10 Gage automatic shot gun, a second choice would be a 12 Gage shot gun. Lead shots have been banned for hunting, it is toxic to other animals who may accidentally eat it. You must use steel shots. Gun broker.com is an on line auction website that is supported by the National Shooting Sports foundation, where you can get guns at reduced prices. Please see the website below.
You will need a Goose Hunting Blind, like the one sold through bassproshops.com, for $19.99. Another possibility would be if there is sufficient brush cover that stands bout 6-8 ft square. A portable blind is the best way to ensure you stay very well concealed. You will need camouflage clothing, a face mask, gloves and hat if you will be in the hunting in the cold for Canadian water fowl. Be sure to buy a water proof suit, gloves and boots, but it is not necessary to buy a suit that blocks sent.
During your hunt you will need decoy geese. Because waterfowl scare easily, you will need to lure the geese to where you are. Be sure to set up your blind into the wind, this is how the geese most often land and you may be able to get them to land right in front of you. Position your decoy birds in a U, shape, position your blind at the bottom of the U, so that the geese will hopefully land right in front of you. The nearest decoy goose should be 5 yards away. Use no more that 40-50 decoy geese as any more can mean danger for the geese and they won't land by you. The decoy geese are sold in may positions, you will need a few different poses to ensure a natural looking group. Use 5-6 watcher geese if you use 40-50 decoy geese. Put them in groups of 5-6 geese, so they will look like familial groupings. Keep your decoys clean, the geese will not be fooled by dirty looking birds.
Now you will need your goose call. This is one of the hardest things to learn for goose hunting, the best advice is to buy and inexpensive kit, with an instructional video. Like, Buck Gardner Calls Canada Hammer Combo Goose Call Hunting Kit available for $24.99 from Bass Pro Shops. Follow the link to view.
Most states require that if you injure a bird, you must make a responsible effort to retrieve all crippled birds. Any wounded birds must be immediately killed and included in your daily bag. Your daily bag limit, is the maximum number of birds you may have in your possession, in transit at home in storage . The daily bag limit varies. In new york, depending on your region, it may be anywhere from 3-5 birds. The maximum possession limit is double the daily bag. In other words depending on your region, you can only have 6-10, on your person, in storage, or in transit.
You must tag your birds. To do this you must, keep a record of all the birds you kill, the date and place they were caught, the hunting season, and the sex of the animal. If you leave your birds with someone, to clean you must leave your signature and a list of the birds by species date and kill.
Hunting was historically a enjoyed by the upper class, and is considered a sport. When done responsibly, it helps to control populations that may otherwise grow out of control. Check with your local conservation society for, goose hunting season in your area.
I have included a link to Orvis.com. This website has instructions for cleaning, and cooking your wold geese. Hunt safely and enjoy!
