Duck Hunting Tips and Techniques
Remember that game on Nintendo where you had that orange and gray gun and you got to shoot all them ducks? Well real duck hunting is nothing like that. I have some basic tips that will help you out.
-Scout via the web before going. Back in the day they didn't have website like waterfowler.com to help you out with scouting reports. Use this resource if you have it.
-Hit the back roads. Ducks will disappear early in the season after they've been chased off the marshes. You should go check out other areas like the ponds, sloughs, and creeks.
-Keep a hunting log. This will help you for your current duck hunting trip and future trips because you will start to learn the duck's tendencies.
-Only use the hail call at long distances. This is only suppose to get the flock's attention not attract a duck.
-Don't blow them away. Your call should be put down towards the water. Calling loudly right at the ducks may scare them away.
-Don't overshoot the targets. The decoy ducks are dropping rapidly so make sure to shoot below them.
-If you're with a group of buddies you guys can make it sound like a flock by one leading with quacks and the other ones making feed calls.
-Think about where the duck will fall after you shoot it. You need it to land where you or your dog can retrieve it without any problems.
-When hunting clear water use your feet to muddy up the water around your decoys. Duck activity will create muddy water so other ducks will take notice and think its a real duck.
-To camouflage your face use a cork from a wine-bottle. Singe the end of the cork with a lighter and then rub the black residue on your face.
