Five Things to Know About Duck Hunting
With the popularity of A&E;'s Duck Dynasty increasing many new duck hunters are hitting the field. Here are five things the beginning duck hunter needs to know.
1. Ducks are Smart
One misconception about hunting is that it is easy to find ducks and be able to get a shot at them. This cannot be farther from the truth. If ducks are heavily hunted they will change their habits and completely leave an area. For that reason it is important for the duck hunter to make sure and scout areas to find out where the ducks are, and then find a good place to set up in that area.
2. Ducks Have Exceptional Eyesight
The new duck hunter must make sure to keep hidden. Ducks have very good eyesight so you have to make sure and have good camouflage. This means camouflage clothing as well as building a good blind from the surrounding brush.
3. Leave the Duck Call at Home
Many new hunters will go buy a duck call and take it straight out into the field. This will often times do more harm than good. Going back to ducks being smart, a duck will not commit to a bad caller. If a duck senses anything is not right it will go land in a different area.
4. It gets Cold
One thing that many hunters do not think about is that duck season usually coincides with winter. Being out on a lake before sunrise can absolutely chill your bones. Duck hunting is not for the faint of heart. No matter many layers you bundle up in you still are going to get cold from time to time. Hunters have to be tough people.
5. Duck Hunting is Expensive
This may not be an issue for many people but for some of us money does not grow on trees. Take in mind the costs of a gun, shells, license, decoys, and proper clothing before you decide to get into the field.
If you take into account these things before going you will have a much higher likelihood of enjoying this great sport.
