Poodles: Sissy Dogs? No Way!
This article debunks the heritage and purpose of the "French" poodles, and telling why they were hunting dogs and the reason for their odd haircuts and ribbons.
But there's a whole history of these intelligent dogs, right down to those prissy looking ribbons of which we have no clue. In fact, most poodle owners have no clue. Otherwise, bird hunting men would be buying them instead of people who are trying to treat them like children, as they walk into fancy salons to be groomed for the latest dog show.
What a shame the truth and history of the poodle has been essentially lost. I first learned about them years ago when I read an article in a magazine. The piece featured those little ceramic dogs of the 1950s, with the curly mane trimmed in gold. Those manes in themselves were an art, and if you're a Boomer, you knew someone whose mom collected them. Or your own mom had a shelf dedicated to them. Today, they're worth good money, but I'm not writing about antiques here. The article was simply a source- it was later in that article in an early '90s issue of 'Collectibles' where the writer got to the point: the poodle is as far from being French as a dog can get. It was and possibly still is a Russian or Ukrainian bird dog. My husband found a source that said they are German, and perhaps they are used there as well, but Russia with its cold weather seems to make more sense.
The Russian bird hunters took their poodles to catch pheasant and other water fowl over the local rivers. They would shoot their birds, then send their dogs over or across the river to retrieve their catches.
Russian and Ukrainian winters are brutal, so the knee and ankle joints had to be protected from arthritis- thus the pom-poms of fur in those places; and yet they had to be aerodynamic so they could swim swiftly and smoothly. The curly top head kept their body heat in, just like we put hats on newborns. Most body heat goes right out the top of the head.
And the cutesy bow on the head? The hunters had to have some way to tell their dogs apart so they knew whose dog was retrieving, and whose bird was whose. Therefore, each hunter used a different color bow for his dogs. For instance, Mr. So-and-so avitch would put blue bows on his dogs' heads. Mr. Huntyilskys' dogs would wear green bows, and Mr. Romanoff's dogs would wear red bows. This prevented any wrestling and thrashing and black eyes on the banks of the river.
And then one day a Frenchman came visiting. He had heard how easily trainable the poodles were, so he took some back to France, with their indomitable energy, taught them some tricks, and put them in the circus. The crowds fell in love with them, understanding nothing about their working nature, and not even knowing where they came from. They became "France's dogs," with their sweet little haircuts and their precious bows. French ladies began buying the dogs, and they quickly became a feminine status symbol.
Even today, people do not understand the meaning of the fur and on their heads, or why we shave the rest of their bodies. To these people, the colored bow on their heads is something to finish off their sweet little coif.
How many poodle owners know the history of these intelligent bird dogs- aerodynamic before it was even a word?
The hunters knew. The dogs knew. And then along came 'cute'; they were French dogs now. Even the sweaters bought for these animals were needed, although most current owners don't know it.
If you're a poodle owner, remember this: if PhooPhoo jumps for a bird or trees a cat, she is expressing her Russian ancestry. Cell memory? Just plain instinct? Give the poodle, which is anything but French, a bit of respect. Her ancestors didn't do circuses in France.
