Guns, a Citizen's Right

Using the right gun for the task is recommended. You wouldn't go hunting deer with a bazooka.

I wrote an article a while back on "Guns, Good or Bad", that can be found here. I mentioned that the word, weapon, was an unfair word for guns when I referred to hunting tools. Now I will talk about guns as weapons. I'm fairly sure that anybody in their right mind would not take a 6-inch bore cannon to go hunting for squirrels. A gun that size is a weapon, used in warfare.

I'd like to tell a true story of idiocy in the woods. I know this story is true because I was there when it happened and I was nearly killed. I was hunting turkey one year, and I was sitting on a large log, watching a large group of turkeys work their way along the bottom of the hill, below me. While I sat and watched them, out of range for my gun, I heard a vehicle approaching me, in the valley below. I watched, in horror, as the man in an open- top Jeep, stopped, stood up in the Jeep, picked up his fully automatic rifle (too far away to see what model), pointed it at the turkeys (that were between him and me) and emptied his cartridge clip, killing about nine turkeys. I rolled backward and hid behind the log I had been sitting on because his bullets were ricocheting and flying all through the woods around me. The man walked over and picked up one turkey, threw it in the back of his Jeep and left, leaving eight dead turkeys in the woods.

An Uzi, AK-47, AR-15 or anything in that category is not a tool for hunting. It is a weapon that is manufactured for mass killing. It has no place in the woods during hunting season. I am sure there is someone out there that would call a fully automatic weapon a tool for sport, but I can't imagine using one for competition shooting. A bazooka could be considered a gun, but could anyone find any part of a deer, once it was hit with one? That would be in the same category as fishing with dynamite.

There are laws regarding the ownership of certain firearms, as well there should be. A gun collector must have a license to own the collection because with a massive collection of all types of weapons, the collection becomes an arsenal. I believe that every citizen, without a criminal record, should be allowed to own, and carry, a gun, anywhere in this country.

This country was born with the use of guns when every pioneer owned one and fought for the right of freedom. There were no armies in this country when we fought the British. It was the citizens that formed the army with their own guns.
