Hunting Spring Turkey: The Basics
The basics of spring turkey hunting
Typically, a morning of turkey hunting involves getting into the woods before sunrise, listening to the peacefulness of the morning woods, and hopefully hearing some early morning gobbling. Turkeys will often gobble when they wake up and are still on the roost, but do not expect this to happen every morning. Being a turkey hunter, there are lots of silent, discouraging mornings. However, the key is to be patient and not get discouraged. There have been many times that I haven't heard a single gobble in the morning, but saw turkeys several times throughout the later morning. Just because they don't gobble doesn't mean they're not there. Although silent turkeys make for a hard hunt, the key is to be patient and quiet.
Calling is an important part of turkey hunting. It's important to know what types of calls to use in what situations. It's also important to know not to call too much. Overusing your calls can give you away to the turkeys and cause them to steer clear of you.
One strategy that is used when trying to locate gobblers is walking down a path and calling about every 100 yards. This is a good way to cover a lot of ground.
Often times, turkeys will be gobbling like crazy on the roost, but after they hit the ground, they shut up completely. This has happened to me numerous times. What happens in this situations is the gobblers get with the hens, and then they have no more need to gobble, so they simply don't. However, if you call every so often, they will remember your location and likely will come back to your location after the hens leave them. Also, they will start to gobble again later in the morning. You just have to be patient and wait for them.
There are many strategies in turkey hunting. I just offered you some basic tips that I've learned from my experience in the woods. Good luck and good hunting!
