Deer Hunting with the .303 British

For a cartridge designed in the age of black powder, the .303 British still stacks up well against modern cartridges for deer hunting. Using the 150 grain soft point Interlock loading from Hornady (data from hornady.com) as a basis here are the numbers for the .303 British. The 150 grain bullet exits the barrel at just under 2700 feet per second and produces 2400 foot pounds of energy. Moving downrange to 300 yards the 150 grain bullet is still moving along at about 2000 feet per second and producing over 1300 foot pounds of energy. As 1000 foot pounds of energy is considered a safe minimum for deer hunting energy, the .303 British more than fits the bill at that range. For comparison the 30-06 Springfield using a 150 grain bullet is moving at 2400 feet per second and producing almost 2000 foot pounds of energy. With a 200 yard zero, the 30-06 Springfield does provide about 3 less inches of bullet drop at 300 yards. While the 30-06 Springfield certainly has the edge, the difference is not as great as many might expect. As 300 yards is a reasonable maximum range for most deer hunters, the .303 British offers no significant handicap to the hunter compared to the 30-06.
I'm not aware of anyone offering a modern production .303 British in America, but as mentioned earlier, used surplus rifles are still common. As with any older rifle a buyer needs to have the gun looked at by a gunsmith to assure it is safe before firing (and hopefully before buying). Hunting ammunition is available from Federal, Hornady, Remington, Winchester and others. Reloading components are available from Midway and others.
If you like historic or odd cartridges or simply need an inexpensive rifle for deer hunting, the .303 British is worth considering.
