Before the Season: Scouting Secrets for Western Big Game Hunting
Before the Season is an in-depth article outlining the tactics western hunters can use to increase their chances of success by pre-season scouting.
Many states across the west are in the midst of a long drought cycle that has caused some herd numbers to decline among big game species. In my home state of Arizona for example, our mule deer herd is at half of the carrying capacity of the available habitat. With fewer animals statewide it is harder to draw tags in many units for the muleys. Success rates hover around fifteen percent in many of the desert units, not well by most people's standards, but there can be some phenomenal hunting at times for hunters that know where and when to look. That's where pre-season scouting comes in, find the diamond in the rough if you will and have the best big game season you have had in years.
Upon figuring out where you will be hunting come fall, purchase several maps of the prospective area. Look them over closely and determine the main access routes, foot trails, wilderness areas, available water and possible escape routes for game looking for sanctuary. Ariel photos are available online from Google Earth, and really help you get familiar with an area. This service is a free, invaluable resource for the new age hunter's diligent search for their next trophy. Visiting the state Game and Fish website for information regarding your hunt area is a good way to narrow down the search for your new hotspot. Information on most states websites is at least up to date for the last couple years and seemingly accurate as far as where to look for the animals on a broad level. The areas they divulge on the Game and Fish websites are seen by a lot of people and should only be used as a starting point. Regional taxidermists are another option to help you pinpoint areas that others have been taking animals. On one of your scouting forays, stop by the local taxidermist and check out the trophy quality potential by asking to see the racks from the area you will be hunting. I have met very few taxidermists that are the un-talkative type, engage in a conversation while being respectful of his time and never leave without checking out the quality of his work and picking up a pamphlet.
While studying the maps, keep in mind most hunters rarely venture further than one half mile from their vehicle, you can use this to your advantage. Simply devise a plan for the average Joe's to push the bucks or bulls to you while waiting in ambush at a pre-determined location that you found through early scouting efforts; a spot like this is usually a good bet for the second, or third day of the season. You can bet the older bucks and bulls know the routine when the woods fill with people and the first gunshots are fired. They quickly go into survival mode. This sometimes means they will adopt nocturnal behavior, or maybe they will move to the thickest, most inhospitable slope on the range. It is up to you to intercept them before they get there or they will become increasingly difficult to find in their backcountry hellholes. Before resorting to tactics like this try and get a whack at a relaxed animal that you have found through diligent scouting efforts.
If at all possible go to your hunt area as early and often as you can. Approach the area as if you were hunting, in open country, find a good vantage point and glass the region you have found while looking at aerial photos and maps or possibly a tip from a friendly taxidermist. If there are a good number of animals in the area you have chosen, keep tabs on them. Watch them as they bed down for the day, continue to watch them as they re-position as they normally do. Usually after putting bucks to bed for a second time, you can sneak out of the area undetected and check out other prospective spots. Return to the area the bedded bucks are hanging and attempt to watch then until dark. If time allows, the best way to keep track of bucks is to watch them for as long as possible without being detected, while learning the area they call home. If you have hunting buddies that you trust with the best of your spots you can take turns monitoring the bucks until opening day. Make note of when the bucks are out and where, it is a good idea to have your GPS, notepad and pen with you to document sightings. It is also fun to take photos of the animals while scouting, as well as a very good way to keep track of individual animals.
Opening day spots are those where you have found the animals to be frequenting, while remaining undisturbed and relaxed. Maybe you have seen a particular group of bucks the last several times you've ventured into the hunt area, in the same area at the same time of day. They seem to not have a care in the world as they browse on cliff rose buds while growing more velvet daily. With each trip to your newfound spot the buck's antlers are larger and you start to wonder what each of them will look like when they're done growing. If you have located animals you would like to harvest in fairly accessible area others may be hunting, it is paramount to your success to get to your spot early, and find the bucks first. If scouting goes as planned, opening day should be the day you get your buck.
