Steever House Bed and Breakfast in Lennox, South Dakota
The Steever House Bed and Breakfast is a short distance from Sioux Falls and a great way to stay close to home when you're on the road
John Steever, his lovely wife, and their two small children inhabit the Steever House Bed and Breakfast but this place felt as though a homey home. Mrs. Steever right away invited us to "make yourselves at home," and we quite literally did. There were all manner of our things strewn everywhere around our rather spacious room when we'd left. My wife and I stayed in "the Blue Room," which was up a flight of stairs and somewhat removed from the rest of the house. It was through a doorway (which had a lock) to the left was our bedroom and to the right was our private full bath. The bedroom in the Blue Room was compact yet never felt suffocating. There was a queen sized bed with comfortable sheets and blanket, two adjacent comfortable chairs in opposite corners, a flat screen TV, and a beautiful view out the window of the epic grounds. To John Steever these grounds are home because they always have been home; the Steever House Bed and Breakfast is a restored Queen Anne Victorian which was moved from some 70 miles away and put down on these five acres which Steever bought from his parents on their adjacent farm.
The grounds at the Steever House Bed and Breakfast are the first things that guests will see; they will see them for some miles away. The land is long and flat and the city driver in me was impressed with the address of the Steever House; 46850 276th St sounds like somewhere in Yonkers or way far out in Queens with bustling low income housing surrounding it. But actually the Steever House Bed and Breakfast is in about as non-threatening a place I'd ever been to. When we ascended the stairs the rooms that were also occupied had doors swung ajar; Mrs. Steever quelled any fears we may have had about leaving our things out; peace and serenity reigned supreme at the Steever House Bed and Breakfast.
Steever House Bed and Breakfast has an open Wireless network and cable satellite television. On the evening that my wife and I were there though the satellite TV was limited though. This was fine because whenever we get to see any TV is a bonus. Mrs. Steever warned us that the wireless internet might cut out from time to time though I was on the network uninterrupted for several hours.
Sleep at the Steever House Bed and Breakfast was divine; I awoke to a wonderful claw-foot tub, rain shower which was quite nice. Then my wife and I descended the stairs for breakfast. There had been rumored to be some other folks at the house but I only had seen some luggage pieces. However when we hit the dining room for breakfast there were seven places set and all these people popped up from all these random places. A couple had been in the attic suite which was right above us and a trio of lady motorcycle riders had been across the hall. I'd heard the lady riders when I'd gone out into the hall that night but I didn't hear a peep from the folks on top of us and because waking had been so relaxed, I'd thought maybe the motorcyclists had taken off early. This was not so, though, and we all sat down to break bread.
My wife and I were the first ones down at the table; we surprised John Steever a bit because we were a few minutes ahead of everyone. Mr. Steever was quick to fill our cups with French press coffee and keep our mugs full. He served fruit medley, these wonderful muffins, fresh scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and these wonderful, tiny, pancakes. The conversation at breakfast was similarly wonderful; the couple from the attic were traveling in from Nebraska and had bicycles attached to the back of their car. The bike trails in South Dakota intertwine with the wonderful courses we'd heard about in Wisconsin. The three motorcycle women were also from Nebraska and they had ditched the hubbies for the weekend and set off gallivanting. We all laughed and shared stories of our travels while the dutiful Mr. Steever kept all of our bellies full and happy.
We left the Steever House Bed and Breakfast with a happy heart to the beautiful open roads of our next destination. If you're traveling through South Dakota; whether for business or pleasure, you should certainly look up the Steever House Bed and Breakfast as an excellent alternative to other cookie-cutter lodging options.
