Budget Deer Hunting
Many people will go out and spend hundreds even thousands of dollars on deer hunting supplies. With these few tips you can get good results for a low price.
No true hunter would ever condone hunting just for a trophy, but the possibility exists of taking a true trophy animal as well as some tasty and healthy table fare, and never has a better opportunity existed to get in on the ground level of this exciting sport. By entering the sport on the ground level I mean ground level, don't believe all the mess you see in the hunting magazines and TV shows. Magazines and TV shows are geared toward one thing...advertising. You don't need all that stuff that the so called professionals are pushing down your throat to be a successful hunter.
Let's run down a typical list of things the magazines and TV shows say you need:
1. High powered rifle $400-$1000
2. Scope Sight $200-800
3. Scent blocking camouflaged clothing $ 200
4. Cover Scent $10
5. Mineral Supplement Feed $500 per year
6. Hunting Blind or Deer Stand $100-500
That's a bare bones list if you listen to what the professionals sell...sorry I mean tell you. So for an investment of a couple of thousand dollars you may get a shot at putting a deer in your freezer.
Don't you believe it! It's all modern marketing BALONEY! If all that stuff was really necessary to be a successful hunter we, as a species, would have starved to death thousands of years ago. I'm pretty sure that those hunter-gathers of long ago never heard of "doe-in-estrus" cover scent yet the survival of mankind is evidence of their success.
So here's the amended list of must-haves for a successful hunt:
1. Warm clothing
2. Gun (rifle or shotgun)
3. Ammunition
4. Common sense
Obviously clothing that is warm enough to keep you comfortable while spending time in the woods is absolutely essential. There's no way that you can be successful unless you spend long hours afield and in order to spend long hours afield you have to be comfortable. You don't have to be camouflaged. Deer are colorblind, as long as you don't have solid colored clothing you're fine. (Do be sure and comply with local regulations regarding wearing safety orange clothing, especially since there are hunters out there who will shoot first and look later) Practically any clothing that is printed in a multi-colored arrangement will break up your outline and make it harder for a deer to see you.
As for your weapon of choice, the best gun to use is the one you are most comfortable with. You don't need a magnum round to put meat on the table, a well placed load of buckshot is plenty sufficient. You also don't need high capacity magazines since a single shot is all you are likely to get, and if you miss, your deer will be in the next county before you can get another shot off. Deer are not stupid animals and spend quite a bit of time in the thickest vegetation that they can find, this limits the range of most hunting scenarios to around the fifty yards mark, just perfect for buckshot or a shotgun slug.
Cover scents are perhaps one of the biggest wastes of time and money that has ever been conceived. The simple fact is that if you pay attention to wind direction you should always put yourself downwind of the direction you expect the deer to be. If a whitetail catches your scent he's gone in a flash. No self respecting deer is going to walk up to a scented rag tied in a tree when the whole area stinks of human. Stay downwind and there's no need to cover your scent.
The last, and perhaps most important, tip for a successful hunt is...get out there! There's no way you will ever make a successful hunt by sitting on your sofa soaking up the brain corrupting images spewing out of your TV. Get up, get out there, and get familiar with the local woodlands. Use some common sense and you can easily put yourself in the right place at the right time to harvest a nice deer.
